Wayne Stockdale Obituary
Dr. Wayne Harrop Stockdale passed away onSunday, November 27, 2005. He was born on September 13, 1919 in Philo, OH to Perl and LaVerna Stockdale.
A graduate of Philo High School, he attended Muskingum College in New Concord, OH and graduated from the University of Louisville, Louisville School of Medicine in 1945. Dr. Stockdale interned at Grace Hospital in Detroit, MI from 1945-1946. From 1946-1948, he served in the U.S. Army Medical Corps in New York Port of Embarkation. After completing his military service, Dr. Stockdale completed a surgical residency at Louisville General Hospital from 1948-1950 and at Grace Hospital from 1950-1952.
In 1952, Dr.Stockdale moved to Smithfield to open a private surgical practice. He "operated" his practice from 1952-1970. In 1970, he left private practice to organize and direct the Emergency Department of Wayne Memorial Hospital in Goldsboro, NC. In 1990, after 20 years in the Emergency Department, Dr. Stockdale retired from active practice. From 1991 until 2003, Dr. Stockdale wasa physician's consultant for Wayne Memorial Hospital.
Dr. Stockdale was an active member of the Smithfield community. During his lifetime, he served as a Deacon and Elder of the First Presbyterian Church, served on the staff of Johnston MemorialHospital, and was a member of the North Carolina Medical Society and Wayne County Medical Society. His hobbies included square dancing with the Smithfield Squares and playing bridge as a member of the Smithfield Bridge Club.
Dr. Stockdale was preceded in death by his wife of 45 years, Rita Bernice Stockdale, and his sister, Ada Gertrude Heinlien.
His survivors include daughters and sons-in-law, Sally McCarthy and Tom, Carol Walters and Paul, and Gaynelle Patterson and Bob; grandson, Kevin Wayne Walters; and special friend, JoAnn Wellons.
In lieu of flowers, Dr. Stockdale desired to have memorials made to the Presbyterian Women of the First Presbyterian Church in Smithfield; or to the Kitty Askins Hospice Center in Goldsboro.
A memorial service will be held for Dr. Stockdale at 6:00 p.m. Wednesday, November 30, 2005 at the First Presbyterian Church of Smithfield. The family will receive friends following the memorial service.
