No wonder he's been on my mind lately. He was such a great instructor and friend to me during my time at NCSU, '67-'71. Dang it, I should have gone to visit him and say thanks. He sure enjoyed a good laugh. I recall his VW bug had a sticker saying something about not opening the windows over 100 mph. He was so patient with kids who were terrified of the water. Back then you had to swim over and back to be able to graduate. There would be students in their last semester, trying and trying, and he was as calm and patient and encouraging as could be. I needed extra hours working as a lifeguard to pay for my last three semesters, he let me pick and choose, then got me a job at the Y on Hillsboro St, too. What a guy.

As a student at State, coach was involved in two of my "favorite" memories...one in passing intermediate swimming, I had to pass a process called "drown proofing". I cheated in the process, did not admit it and Coach put me back into the pool for another extended period of suffering. You did not mention it, but Coach was an outstanding handball player and ...so was I. Undefeated, Coach decided it was time that I learned a little humility. He was a bit cocky and told the class that if I beat him, everyone in the class would get an A. He sent everyone up to observe the beating he expected to give me...my memory tells me that he eventually won 21-17...lets simply say that I made him earn the victory. The last time that I saw coach was at a nursing home on Dixie Trail. I was there visiting another friend from Western Boulevard Presbyterian Church and saw Coach's name on a door as I passed by. Contrary to his calling others "Tiger", when I knocked on the door and was called in, as soon as he saw me, he yelled out BAKERRRR! I will never forget the man I grew to admire....to respect and look to. While I am saddened that I did not know of his passing, I am thrilled that he now is in the place he so richly deserves residence, peace and joy.

Privilege is something I think about often. When I saw my former Swim Coach's obituary in the N&O today, it reminded me (again) what a fortunate and privileged life I have led. How many kids get to have a 2-time ACC Champion, Olympic Qualifier, Rhode Island and North Carolina Swimming Hall of Fame member and NCSU PE Director as their Swim Coach? Not many. I thank my Dad for knowing him. Coach Sonner was a tough and demanding teacher (and yes, he was a former Marine...with a flat top) but he also loved kids and teaching them how to swim (a sport he thought was the BEST lifetime sport). I remember being (around ) 4 years old when I was staring at the deep end of the pool (9 feet) and wondering if I was going to sink when I first jumped in. My parents had me in the water as a baby (at Atlantic Beach and the Faculty Club) but learning to swim strokes was different than just paddling around. "Coach" taught us freestyle and backstroke (his specialty) first. I spent hours and years in the water mastering those 2 strokes. Later on, we learned breast stroke, side stroke, (the dreaded) butterfly, elementary backstroke and the trudgen crawl (a stroke most folks have never heard of). "Coach" would yell instructions from the side of the pool BUT he would also spend hours in the water doing demos and leading by example (ground school on the deck with a kickboard happened too). I remember asking him why we started in the deep end and he said, "You'll just touch the bottom in the shallow end!" I swam laps every day....until I got it right. I liked competing in Swim Meets and winning ribbons (a thing that went on for years at the CCC and the YMCA).Years later, at NCSU Sports Camp, I remember Water Safety class....and throwing those knotted pants over my head....again and again...just to keep them inflated. Thank you "Coach" for giving me a lifetime love of the water and showing me the best "lifetime sport." I hope by teaching "Swim for Life" at the YMCA, I have "Paid it Forward" a little bit (You were right, the look on someone's face when they learn how to swim is the best). RIP "Coach" Sonner

He was wonderful! This is Susannah Stewart, Jack's youngest. I think the last time I saw Bill, Dad and I had gone to the faculty club to join him for a Thanksgiving lunch. He and Dad seemed to share a very special bond.
