William Sutton Obituary

William Sutton Jr

July 29, 1936 - July 27, 2024

Apex, North Carolina - William Madison Sutton Jr. (Bill) was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather. Bill was born on July 29th, 1936 to Roberta Sanderlin Sutton and William Madison Sutton in McComb, Mississippi. He passed away peacefully on July 27th, 2024 in Raleigh, NC. Bill was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Bob, a grandson Stephen, and his wife Patricia.

Bill grew up in Orlando, FL and graduated from Edgewater High School and the University of Florida. He was a member of Chi Phi Fraternity and ROTC.

Bill's first career began in the US Army, where he served for 22 years. All of his service was as an officer in the Infantry. Notable achievements were: Expert Infantry Badge, Parachutist Badge, Bronze Star Medal (1 Oakleaf Cluster), Marksman Qualification Badge, Sharpshooter Qualification Badge, and many others. He served overseas in Korea, Germany, and 2 tours in Vietnam. In addition, he and his family were stationed at many posts throughout our country.

His second career was in town management. Bill served as a town manager in North Carolina, Georgia, and Florida. His final management position was in Apex, NC from 1993 to 2001, when he retired. After retirement, Bill served on the Apex Town Council as a Councilman and Mayor.

While serving as Town Manager in Waynesville, NC, he met and married his wife Patricia. They lived a happy 24 years together until her death in 2017. They loved Apex and their neighborhood of Abbington.

Bill and Pat enjoyed travelling to Europe and sailing a charter boat in the Virgin Islands. The trips, friends, and family were a special avocation.

Bill was extremely proud to be a part of Apex's growth from a town of 5,500 to 25,000 during his 8 year tenure. The hard work exhibited by town employees, council members, and citizens remained a point of pride and satisfaction to Bill.

Bill is survived by his 3 sons: Kevin (Kathleen), Derek (Rona) and Ethan; his daughters, Tricia (Brian Coppedge), Cara (Brad Mills), and Debbie Nolen, 16 grandchildren, 9 great grandchildren, 1 niece, and 1 nephew. These family members are Bill's proudest legacy.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, August 3, 2024, in the Apex United Methodist Church, 100 S Hughes St, Apex, NC. His family will receive relatives and friends from 10 a.m. until the time of the service. Burial, with military honors, will be in Apex Cemetery.

The family would like to thank the staff at Transitions LifeCare for their personal and professional care of Bill in his final days.
