Howard Francis Smith was born 1924 in Cornish, Utah, the middle of five children. He joined the Army Air Force during WWII, rising to First Lieutenant with the 8th Air Force. At the age of 19, he bravely piloted a B17 Flying Fortress in 35 missions over Germany.
After the war, Howard attended University of Idaho and became an organic chemist with a focus on polymers. He invented a breakthrough in primer formulation that became industry standard for 35 years, revolutionizing epoxy aircraft primers.
Howard is survived by his wife Julia and was incredibly proud of his four children, Karen (predeceased), Neal (Samantha), Daniel (Minnie) and Lana (Daniel) as well as granddaughters, Alexandra and Stephanie, and 9-week old grandson, Jack.
Howard was an avid golfer, crackerjack bridge player, American history enthusiast and never missed the daily newspaper crossword puzzle.
Lovingly remembered as gentle and kind, he lived by the Golden Rule. Howard will be deeply missed by his family and friends.
