John Vogel Obituary

John Vincent Vogel, born October 9, 1961 in Pasadena, CA, died suddenly at his home on August 8, 2015. He was the fourth child of Robert and Barbara Vogel of Santa Barbara, formerly of Arcadia. "Johnny," as he was commonly known, graduated from Arcadia High School in 1979. Upon his graduation from UCLA in 1983, he took a job in sales in Los Angeles. Johnny earned his real estate broker's license in 2000 and joined Kerry Mormann and Associates, where he specialized in land and ranch sales. He and Kerry worked together in the real estate business in Santa Barbara County for 15 years, up to and including the time of his death.

In 1989 Johnny met Janelle Miller of Santa Barbara. He proposed to her while vacationing in Hawaii, and they married in 1991. They made their home in Santa Barbara following their marriage. Their daughter Carlyssa Barbara was born in 1994, and their daughter Kaitlyn Fay was born in 1996. Their son Vincent Jackson followed in 2000.

Johnny played baseball during his youth, then continued his passion coaching his son in Little League. Johnny and Janelle never missed their children's sporting events, school and church activities. He was a member of Saint Raphael's Catholic Church, and a member of the Knights of Columbus.

John was a man with an immense heart and keen wit. His sense of humor and positive outlook brought joy to everyone he met. He always offered kind words and encouraging advice to his friends and family, including "Hello, Sweetheart" and "Every day is a new day." He loved baseball, shooting, grilling, a cold beer, camping and cards. He was an avid reader and collector of comics. He followed all the superheroes, especially Superman.

Johnny was active in drama productions throughout high school. Later, he was cast in a few roles while pursuing a film major in college, most notably as a hockey player on the "Trapper John, M.D." television series. Johnny was also well-known for his expertise in film trivia. He admired Ronald Reagan and named his dog Dutch in his honor. Johnny excelled at photography and took many beautiful pictures, especially of his children. He will be most remembered for his dedication and loyalty to his family and friends.

Johnny is survived by his wife Janelle, daughters Carly and Kaitlyn, son Vincent, sister Karen Cayley of Santa Clarita, brothers Jim Vogel of San Dimas and Bill Vogel of Petaluma, and many other family members and friends. A mass celebrating his life will be held on Friday, August 14th at 10 a.m. at Saint Raphael's Catholic Church, 5444 Hollister Ave., Santa Barbara.

Johnny Vogel LOVED his family

After Janelle moved out of the house last year, the new owner did some major remodeling and stripped the inside down to the bones. This was found in the bathroom that he remodeled. I remember Johnny as always being so generous with his time and help. When I would get stuck trying to fix something, I would go next door and ask Johnny and his answer was always the same. "Sure!"

Dear Janelle,
I have just today learned the news of your Johnny's passing (we were out of the country) and I am so very sorry to hear of this and am truly heart broken for you and heavy with grief for your family. Please know that as the days go by and time passes that you will not be forgotten, but that I will think of you often with a prayerful heart. I did not know Johnny well, but was around you guys a few times at the ball park and then a few occasions when out with the Hymans. It was obvious to me that Johnny was a GOOD man, a GOOD husband, a GOOD father, and that he LOVED his family very much. With heartfelt sympathy,
~ Candy (Natalie & Joshua)

Hello, just wanted express my condolences, I knew John since grade school, in Arcadia, and although he and I did not always see eye-eye, we were always part of a 'well-oiled' machine in drama at Arcadia High. We shared some amazing times... This truly comes as a shock, he was a brilliant fella. My sympathies to his wife and children, Sincerely, T. Wainscott
