Gilbert Vazquez Obituary

Gilbert Vazquez, 87, of Sherman, died Monday, Feb. 12, 2007, at his home.
Mr. Vazquez was born in Puerto Rico, May 14, 1919, son of the late Felix and Isabel Veiga Vazquez.
He was a veteran of World War II, serving with the U.S. Army, and received several medals, including the Silver Star with one Oak Leaf Cluster.
A graduate of Columbia University, he was employed as import-export clerk with Exquisite Forms, retiring in 1991.
Mr. Vazquez moved from New York City to Sherman in 1962. He was an amateur radio operator -- ham radio -- K2YFQ and K1YKO. He was former president of the Manhattanville Senior Center.
He is survived by two sons: Roy G. Vazquez of Sherman, and Steven Vazquez and his wife Anna of Sherman; a daughter, Janet D. Benjamin of Daytona Beach, Fla.; two sisters: Nelly Limardo of Middle Village, N.Y., and Mabel Caldarella of West Palm Beach, Fla.; and two grandchildren: Ryan Benjamin of Chapel Hill, N.C., and Paul Benjamin of St. Petersburg, Fla.
Funeral services will take place Saturday at 3 p.m. at the Lillis Funeral Home, 58 Bridge Street, New Milford. Burial will be in the spring at North Cemetery, Sherman.
Friends may call on Friday, from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Lillis Funeral Home.
