Herbert Max ("Herbie") Schaltegger, age 86, of New Milford, Connecticut, passed away peacefully in his sleep on June 25, 2025. Herbie was born on February 28, 1938, in Switzerland. He immigrated with his parents as a small child in late 1940, the late Herbert E. and Hilda Krebser Schaltegger, settling in New Milford. After graduating high school, Herbie served a term in the U.S. Marine Corps, prior to attending Maryville College in Tennessee. Returning to New Milford, Herbie worked for approximately 20 years as a crane operator at Scoville/Century Brass. After the closure of Century Brass, Herbie worked as a delivery driver for a local lumber yard before setting into retirement. He was a passionate Yankees fan, tolerated the rest of his New York sports teams with a mix of exasperation and resignation, and became a long-distance fan of the University of Tennessee Volunteers, the alma mater of his son and grandson.
Herbie is survived by his son, Herbert ("Herb") Schaltegger, and daughter-in-law, Amy Schaltegger of Murfreesboro, Tennessee; grandson, Ethan Schaltegger of Portland, Oregon; brother, Richard Schaltegger, and wife, Arlene of Bluffton, South Carolina; brother-in-law, John Lowrance of Jefferson City, Missouri; nieces, Wendy Holtz and Amy Escoto, and their families; nephews, Eric Schaltegger, Matthew Schaltegger, Nathan Lowrance and Andrew Lowrance, and their families; and numerous great-nieces and great-nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Herbert E. and Hilda Schaltegger; daughter, Deborah Schaltegger; sister, Heidi Lowrance; and brother, Fred Schaltegger; former wife, Judy Ubry; sisters-in-law, Peggy Schaltegger, Louise Schaltegger and Mary Schaltegger; and his loving partner, Ellen Bennitt, with whom he spent over 44 years.
There is no formal service planned. The family will hold an informal remembrance gathering at Colosseo, in New Milford, on Thursday, July 17th from 4pm - 6pm. All of Herbie's friends are welcome.
