It is with a heavy heart that we post the unexpected passing of James "Jim" Mose, a longtime resident of Hancock, New Hampshire, on Christmas Eve of last year. He is survived by his wife, Robin (Scheid) Mose and four children: Gunnar, Kyler, Gracyn and Quinten. In writing Jim's obituary, we have been gifted the profound honor of reflecting on the lasting impact he had on his family, his community and the world.
Jim and his wife Robin both grew up in Ridgefield, CT and graduated in 1982 from Ridgefield High School. They married in 1991 and settled in Hancock in 2002 to raise their young family. He cherished his community and the people who make it what it is. If you were fortunate to run into Jim around town, you were undoubtedly greeted as family. It is hard to recall any interaction with him that did not begin with a big hug and end in laughter. He served as a selectman in Hancock from 2012 -2015. Jim's career in aviation brought him to all corners of the globe, but the life he built with his family in Hancock remained his greatest source of pride.
Jim's lifelong passion for aviation was sparked by his father's career and the tight community of airline pilot families where he was raised. He earned his degree in Flight Technology and Aerospace Sciences from the University of North Dakota. Soon after, Jim joined the Air National Guard with the South Dakota "Lobos" 175th Fighter Squadron where he flew the F-16 "Viper" fighter jet. As his aviation career progressed, he transferred to the Connecticut Air National Guard "Flying Yankees" where he flew the A-10 "Warthog," serving a limited tour over Iraq in 1999. He retired from the Connecticut Air National Guard in 2001 with the rank of Captain.
Along with his military flying, Jim was a commercial pilot with Northwest Airlines, holding ratings on the DC9 and Boeing 747, later flying with Kiwi International Airlines where he held a rating on the Boeing 727. He also flew corporate aircraft for TAG, EJM and International Paper before founding White Mountain Aviation in 2008, a flight management company that employed pilots and aircraft maintenance personnel serving clients from the political and financial worlds. Jim's strengths from military training and commercial experience were perfect synergies in the corporate flying community and led him to a career with Freestream Aircraft Limited, in the ultra-competitive world of corporate airplane sales, where he traversed the world. His dedication to his work and his natural ability to communicate with people of diverse cultures chartered his success and helped him build strong, lasting relationships across the globe. In 2023, Jim returned to the skies as a corporate pilot on a Global Express based near his home in New Hampshire.
Beyond aviation, Jim had an enduring love for sports, a passion he passed down to his children. There was nothing he enjoyed more than watching his children compete in lacrosse, soccer, and hockey. Lacrosse held a special place in Jim's heart. He was recruited by and played
Division 1 Lacrosse at Radford University. He played in a local "Masters" Lacrosse league and coached for the Peterborough Recreation Department, mentoring the next generation of athletes.
One of Jim's greatest loves was for animals. Throughout his two decades in Hancock, he and Robin opened their home to countless rescued cats and dogs. Jim took immense pride in the lives he nurtured and held a special bond with his ducks and chickens – affectionately known as his "ladies".
Jim was also blessed with mechanical aptitude. His talent for taking things apart and putting them back together was remarkable, and his ability to quickly learn how to fix just about anything has been described as "annoyingly impressive". Jim's carpentry skills were expressed in the construction and maintenance of the family home in Hancock and later, the house he built with Robin and Quinn in Greenfield, NH in 2024.
Jim once said that his life was defined by the infinite bounty of being known in Hancock as Robin's husband, and Gunnar, Kyler, Gracyn and Quinn's dad. Above all his accomplishments, Jim considered being a father his greatest privilege. Jim was loved by all who knew him and is most described as warm, affectionate, passionate, wicked smart and irreverently funny. Jim is also survived by his parents, Karen and Doug Mose, brother Jeff, (Christine), by aunts and uncles, many nieces and nephews, cousins, and dear friends.
