Jeffrey Brandt Obituary

Jeffrey L. Brandt, 52, a Philadelphia native and longtime resident of Ridgefield is credited with being responsible for the issuance of one of the most influential and successful "business method patents" in history, the "Priceline.com Patent." His expertise in the intellectual patent field, particularly in patent process and patent portfolio management, patent strategy for startup companies, and specializing in controversial and cutting-edge "business method patents," is unparalleled.
Mr. Brandt died suddenly and unexpectedly on May 30, 2007, in his home that he and his surviving wife, Dyane L. Brandt, designed and built just a few years ago. The cause of his early death is still being determined.
Mr. Brandt also leaves behind a stepson, Carson C.K. Fincham, his wife Magdalena M. Fincham, and their children, Adelaine C.M. Fincham and Carson C.M. Fincham, all of Ridgefield, each of whom Mr. Brandt loved and adored.
Mr. Brandt is survived by his brother, Randy Brandt and wife Michele, and their son, Jake Brandt, as well as brother Lance Brandt; mother Annette Nathanson and her husband, Charles Nathanson, and father Melvin Brandt, all of Philadelphia.
Mr. Brandt was born on October 26, 1954, in Philadelphia, oldest of three brothers. Mr. Brandt graduated from Lafayette College in Easton, Pa., with a B.S. in electrical engineering. In 1976. Mr. Brandt went on to graduate from the University of Baltimore School of Law in Baltimore, with a J.D. in 1981. From there, Mr. Brandt attended and completed the prestigious General Electric intellectual property training program in Washington, D.C., and then went on to hold the titles of: patent attorney of the General Electric Research & Development facility in Schenectady, N.Y.; patent attorney of the Eastman Kodak Company in Rochester, N.Y.; patent attorney, location counsel and division licensing counsel of IBM in Poughkeepsie, N.Y.
Mr. Brandt then founded the Intellectual Property Department of Walker Digital Corporation of Stamford, and helped launch Walker Digital's most famous offshoot, and one of the most successful initial public offerings in the history of e-commerce, Priceline.com.
Mr. Brandt most recently founded JLB Consulting Inc., where he provided strategic IP portfolio consulting to emerging businesses and investors, as well as industry-leading counseling to some of the country's largest and most successful corporations. Mr. Brandt founded the Axiom Patent Group and was an Axiom Legal Solutions service provider, was a certified TRRU Metrics Analyst, skilled in the application of the pl-x.com proprietary options pricing methodology to the valuation of IP, served as consultant, counselor, advisor, board member, and/or director of dozens of companies, was a former director of the Intellectual Property Owners (IPO) Association, and a panelist on the National Patent Board.
Mr. Brandt's talents extended into every field and endeavor he encountered. He was a former ballroom dance instructor, soloed a private airplane, made his own knives in his home workshop, participated in Jujitsu and boxing, learned the art of boomerang throwing, sailed, played guitar and piano, sang, and learned many, many ways to cook eggs. His love and devotion to children, particularly his grandchildren, nephews, and many nieces was exceptional.
He will be sorely missed by his loving family, immediate and extended, as well as his many thousands of clients, colleagues, and acquaintances in Connecticut, New York, Philadelphia, and Baltimore, as well as across the country and around the world.
