Jeffrey Schutz Obituary

Schutz, Jeffrey "Joel"
Jeffrey "Joel" Schutz, 16, of Sherman, CT, went Home into the arms of His Savior, Jesus, on February 3, 2016. Despite Joel's severe cerebral palsy, which hindered his ability to move, and his chronic breathing issues, Joel loved life and lived it to its fullest. Even though Joel needed others to live, he loved to live through others. He was a patient listener who rarely missed a thing that was said while easily empathizing with those around him. Joel loved anything to do with motion, including hiking, biking, sledding, walking, and bouncing on balls. Joel was enamored with his school. The staff and students at St.Vincent's Special Needs School cared for Joel, cared about Joel, and challenged him to reach his full potential for over 10 years. He enjoyed learning, reading, and anything that challenged him cognitively. He looked forward each day to doing homework with mom. He had a tremendous sense of humor, always appreciating a good joke and graciously making the joke-teller feel good by smiling even at bad ones. He especially adored his family, friends, teachers, therapists, classmates, nurses and doctors. Joel had a special bond with his grandmother, Sue Cushing, who poured her life into him. Joel enjoyed hiking and biking in Acadia National Park, and vacationing in Disneyworld. He was an avid fan of the New York Giants. Card and Board games like Chutes and Ladders, Monopoly, Clue, Tripoli and Battleship were among his favorite activities, along with playing Warhammer 40k (Go Salamanders!) with his dad and brother. He is survived by his parents, Jeffrey John and Laura Elizabeth (Cushing) Schutz of Sherman, CT; his brother Josh (14) and sisters Nicole (11) and Amber (2); 4 grandparents; his maternal great-grandmother; and many aunts, uncles, and cousins who love him dearly.
A Viewing will be held on Friday, February 12, from 5-8pm at Honan Funeral Home, 58 Main St., Newtown. A Service of Celebration and Worship will be held on Saturday, February 13, starting at 10am, at the Sherman Congregational Church. Interment will be in Sherman North Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that any financial donations be given to St. Vincent's Special Needs School in Joel's name. Donations can be sent to The Feroleto Children's Development Center, 95 Merritt Boulevard, Trumbull, CT, 06611. Joel gave his heart to Jesus by age 4. His favorite conversation was talking about Heaven, and he rejoiced in knowing that Jesus had guaranteed him a new body that is perfect, imperishable and eternal. He taught those of us who have survived him about the real kind of Hope, and about what really matters in life. While Joel may not have accomplished much in this temporary, material world, he has left an impact on the lives of countless people that will resonate far into Eternity.
His life is evidence of the Truth written about in Romans 8 of the Bible:
"And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to His purpose," and, "For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory that is to be revealed in us. For the creation waits in eager longing for the revealing of the sons of God."

Dear Shutz Family, We may not have known Joel long, but it was easy to see how much he was loved and enjoyed being with his family. It was great to see him across the field cheering for his brother at the soccer games. We're sad that he won't be here with you any longer, but equally blessed to know that he is at rest in Heaven. We'll be keeping you all in our prayers.

God Bless,

The Murphy's (Coach Pat and Family)

For the many years I've known your family and Joel, I have learned so much about the bond of a true family, that we are here for such a short time, but the love, courage, strength and determination shown by all of you, including Joel. Because of your Faith, your genuine Souls, we have all been blessed with your presence on Earth. It is sad to not have Joel here, however, it is knowing that he is running and laughing and playing like never before is what makes me smile and know that he was meant to pass through our lives. The girls loved swimming with Joel and playing and we will forever be blessed to have him and your family in our lives. God Bless to you all and thank you for sharing all of you!

I was so glad I got to know Joel from the time I started teaching at Feroleto. I will miss seeing his smile at the lousy jokes we told him, and I'm so glad he had fun in my music classes. He brought great joy to us at school, and we will always miss him.

Joel, was an amazing child, with a smile that could light up your worst day
he was funny, bright, and full of spirit, he radiated it through and through
no matter how difficult things were for him, he always managed to smile, laugh
and somehow in turn he would make you feel better, Joel, certainly gave it all he had
each and everyday, he was one of my son's
first friends, and will remain in our hearts forever, I don't believe i can walk through
those doors at school and not think of Joel. Our hearts are broken know your son touch so many people in so many ways, he will always be remembered for
the Amazing person he was, and now he is at Peace, free from what holds us back here,
we can see him now, running, playing, and watching over those he loves so much.
God Bless !!!
Love, Cathy, Domenic & Danny D'Attilo

Joel, since birth was embraced by abundant LOVE. As much care, attention
and affection he received, his beautiful heart was an immeasurable
blessing in return. I had the privilege of spending time with this
charismatic boy who brought such joy to his grandparent's lives. Their
great devotion and enthusiasm in sharing time together, always brought a
smile to Joel's face. Now this sweet boy smiles with Jesus. We pray for
Joel's amazing parents, brother, sisters and all who were deeply woven
into Joel's life on earth.

I am deeply sorry for your loss of such a wonderful son. Joel was my buddy at school. I have so many wonderful memories of him throughout the years. The spinner, walks, the jokes (even the bad ones), silly rhymes, field trips and all the hard work he did. Joel grew tremendously over the past several years. His quest for knowledge was endless! Joel holds a very special place in my heart. He will be missed more than words can express.

To the family Jeffrey,

I'm sorry for your loss. I don't personally know Jeffrey. But my heart was touched and I am feeling sad to learn of his passing. My prayers and thoughts are with you all. I myself had to bury my very first born son 6 days after his birth. God will see you all through this difficult time of bereavement.

To be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord. Jesus is a comforter. I'm praying for you all.

God bless you all in Jesus name
