Susan Bury Obituary

Susan Jayne Bury
Susan Jayne Bury, 83, of Carlsbad, CA, passed away peacefully on January 27, 2026, with her daughters by her side.
Susan was born on June 28, 1942, in Minneapolis, MN, to Mary Jayne and Paul Barcelow. She met and married the love of her life, Bill Bury, in Minnesota. Shortly thereafter, they moved to Bethel, CT. In Bethel, Sue was an entrepreneur and an award-winning professional photographer. She was very involved in the community and volunteered at Danbury Hospital.
Upon retirement, Sue and Bill moved to Hilton Head, SC, where they enjoyed golf, beach walks, bridge and dancing. She also loved to needlepoint.
Susan was known for her beautiful smile, warm personality and generosity. She traveled extensively and especially loved multiple African safaris with friends. She always had a camera ready to capture that special memory and her home was filled with photos of friends and family. Her love of music and ability to recall lyrics brought her much joy as she participated in singalongs even in the late stages of her illness.
Susan is survived by her daughters, Julie Thomas (Steve) and Chris Merullo; her grandchildren, Matt Merullo (Gabriela), Mackenzie Merullo (Hayes), Melissa Thomas, and Samuel Thomas; great-grandson, Jack; son-in-law, Steve Merullo; brothers, Mike Barcelow (Heidi) and Kris Barcelow (Jane); and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Mary Jayne and Paul Barcelow; and her husband, Bill Bury.
The family would like to thank the caregivers at La Marea Memory Care in Carlsbad and AccentCare Hospice for their loving care of Susan.
A celebration of Susan's life will be held at a future date.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in her memory be made to www.scottyfund.com , a charity near and dear to Susan's heart.

My Mom, Alyce Jane Bernard, and Susan were friends during her time in Bethel. When my mom was finished with her chemotherapy Susan suggested they do a fun "boudoir" session. It helped to make my mom feel like a woman again. She treasured those photos and so do I. As I type this I can see one of her photos, from that session , that hangs in my private office. Not only was she an incredible photographer she was a good friend. May she RIP and fly with the Angels. Allyson Bernard

So sorry to her of Susans passing. We connected in Bethel Ct many years ago at The Rock Ridge Country Club. I vividly recall her warm and caring nature. When she learned of my grandmother coming to the UAS from Cuba at the age of 92, She immediately offered to do a photo shoot. It was a lovely day. I am certain she has connected with Bill and will again be part of a loving couple.
May she rest peacefully.

Dear Julie and Chris: I was saddened to hear of my long time friend Susan's passing. I have tried to reach her after the Christmas letters stopped. She must have moved. I will always remember her with warm thoughts and treasure our friendship and all the good times we had. She was the best and loved our time together when Paul and Bill were with us too! Please know what a special and delightful person to have as a friend and such a loving Mother to you both. I know how much she loved and was so proud of you. Sending love to you and your families!
