William Cavanaugh Obituary

William J. Cavanaugh, Sr., age 77 of Barnegat, passed Sunday, August 8, 2010 at home surrounded by his children. Born in Trenton, N.J., son of the late Thomas and Rose Wallace Cavanaugh, he resided in Pennsylvania, Connecticut, Virginia, and Texas before moving to Barnegat in 1999. A graduate of Trenton Catholic Boys High School, Trenton Jr. College, and Lafayette College where he was elected to Tau Beta Pi, an Honorary Engineering Assoc. He did graduate work at the Univ. of PA. He played football at Trenton Catholic and baseball in three Trenton City Leagues, The Rancocas Valley League and was one of the founding members of the Trenton Jr. College baseball team. He was employed by the American Bridge Division of U.S. Steel Corp., the Phil. District Army Corps of Engineers, American Cement, and lastly by Lone Star Industries for 31 years, retiring as VP of Operations. He was a registered professional engineer and a 40 year member of the Society for Mining, Metallurgy and Exploration; a 3rd & 4th Degree member of the K. of C. and a 1st Degree member of the Ancient Order of Hibernians for many years.He served in the US Army in Germany in 1955 and 1956. Following his retirement, he held volunteer positions with Service Corp of Retired Exec. (SCORE), High Point NJ State Park, NJ Superior Court system in Newton and Toms River, AARP tax preperation sites; US Coast & Geodetic Survey, Barnegat Twsp. Schools Senior Advisory Committee; All Saints Regional Catholic School's 5th, 6th, 7th Grade Math classes and 8th Grade Algebra class. He was also a tour guide at the Sterling Hill Mining Museum, Ogdensburg, NJ. Former Trustee and past Pres. of Heritage Bay Homeowners Assoc., Barnegat. Predeceased by his beloved wife Josephine and a brother, Thomas he is survived by two daughters and son-in-laws, Jeanne and Donnie Alecci, Briarcliff, N.Y., Anne Marie and Daniel Wambold, Franklin Lakes, N.J.; seven sons, William J. Cavanaugh, Jr, Brookfield, James and Patrick Cavanaugh, Danbury, Steven Cavanaugh, Indianapolis, Ind., Thomas Cavanaugh of New J ersey and daughter-in-law, Kaye Cavanaugh of Poughkeepsie, N.Y., Joseph and wife, Ellen Cavanaugh, Louisville, KY, John Cavanaugh, Chesapeake, Va.; a sister, Eileen and husband, Joseph Lanigan, Seaside Park, NJ; three sisters-in-laws, Kathryn Cavanaugh, Cream Ridge, N.J., Janice Moore and Emily Sonessa, Ocean Grove, N.J.; seven grandchildren, Courtney and Keeley Cavanaugh, Karen and John Alecci, Daniel and Patrick Wise, Ashley Jeanne Wambold; twelve nieces and nephews. Memorial Mass, Friday August 13th, 11 a.m. at St. Mary's Church, 26 Dodgingtown Rd., Bethel, CT. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Mary's Parish, PO Box 609, Barnegat, NJ 08005; All Saints Regional Catholic School, 400 Doc Cramer Blvd., Manahawkin, NJ 08050 or Deborah Hospital Foundation, 212 Trenton Rd., Browns Mills, NJ 08015. Barnegat Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
