Charles Steinberg Obituary

Charles Steinberg
Born: April 2, 1930 in Spring Valley, IL
Died: July 15, 2024 in Rockford, Il
Charles Steinberg, 94, of Spring Valley, died July 15 at OSF St Anthony Hospital in Rockford, IL.
He was born on April 2, 1930 to Maurice and Ethel (Wasserstrom) Steinberg. Charlie grew up in Spring Valley, where he loved the small town life and the many lifetime friendships he made. He graduated Hall High School in 1948, where he was a member of the football team that was inducted into the school's athletic Hall of Fame. After high school he attended De Paul University and the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, but the call of Spring Valley and the family business proved too strong. He began working at Steinberg's Furniture in 1949, and remained there until his retirement
20 years ago. He cherished the many relationships he made with customers over 50 years in business.
He met the love of his life, Charlene Wallace of Chicago, on a blind date arranged by relatives. They were married on February 22, 1959. He enjoyed swimming in his pool, fishing, and his Thursday night poker game that lasted for over 50 years, and outlasted the many local taverns that played host to Charlie and his friends.
After retirement to Florida, he enjoyed his daily walks along the Atlantic Ocean in his trademark orange bucket hat, and the new set of friends he and Charlene made from around the country. He was a man filled with warmth, humor, dedication and love, a dedicated father and grandfather, and loyal fan of The San Francisco Giants and New York Football Giants. He was a member of Synagogue Shere Chedek in Spring Valley, Temple Bnai Moshe in LaSalle, Agudas Achim Synagogue in Peoria, and Temple Beth Ami in Boca Raton, Florida.
Charlie is survived by Charlene, his wife of 65 years, three children, Bruce (Bonnie) of Peru, Leslie (Tony) Ruda of Spring Valley, and David (Sharon) of Michigan, and four grandchildren, Abigail Steinberg, Jacob Steinberg, Alyse Ruda, and Joshua Ruda. He was preceded in death by his parents, and two brothers, Sidney Steinberg, and Daniel Steinberg. Charlie, Danny, and Sidney exemplified the true meaning of brotherhood and set an example for generations to follow.
Graveside services will be held Thursday, July 18, at 11 am at the Peoria Hebrew Cemetery, 2807 W Heading Ave, West Peoria IL. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Hall Township Food Pantry, The Spring Valley City Library, or The Ark Jewish Charities of Chicago.

Please accept condolences for the entire family. Charlie was my neighbor and friend. As a child I always looked up to him as a great family man and respected businessman. He was always interested in my athletic pursuits and he frequently would talk to me about the Chicago Cubs. He allowed me to use his basketball hoop for countless hours of practice. As kids we were always thrilled when he would invite us to swim in their pool. Charlie wrote a recommendation for me to attend the US Naval Academy.Throughout my life when I would return to Spring Valley for a visit I would frequently stop in to see him and Charlene. He was always so welcoming and so interested in what was happening with my life and my family. He was a true gentleman and a great man who will be missed by many.

I will never forget spending summers with Uncle Charlie when my family returned to Peru and Spring Valley. We would play in the pool with all of the cousins and run around while all the adults enjoyed each others company. I will never forget the love and kindness he shared to us all, oh and the amazing ester slide and diving board! I am so thankful that to reconnect with Uncle Charlie again last March and get to hear his quick wit and kind heart once again. Uncle Charlie, you will be missed greatly and I know I will always cherish my memories of all the moments in time we had to share together.
