Urner Carl Obituary

LAVALE, MD – Urner Garfield Carl, Jr., 95, passed away on Wednesday, January 22, 2014, at his home.

Born in Cumberland, MD, on October 22, 1918, he was the son of the late Urner G. Carl, Sr. and Catherine Frantz Carl.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Violet (Stroup) Carl; his sister, Mary Elizabeth Donavan; and brothers Frantz Carl and Charles Carl.

He is survived by his brother-in-law, William Stewart of Keyser, WV; and his sister-in-law, Almeda (Pete) Stroup, of Pasadena, MD, several close nieces and nephews, including Debra (Stewart) Shears, and husband Gary of North East, MD; Mark Stewart, and wife Pam of Morgantown, WV; Scott Stewart and Sherri of Ranson, WV; Kay Klovstad, and husband Jack of Pasadena, MD: Otis Stroup, and wife Karen of Catonsville, MD; Glenda Jones and husband William (Rocky) of Baltimore; Sandy Kaufman, and husband Chris of Baltimore; Dick Easton of Cumberland, MD; and David Carl; as well as many other great-nieces and nephews. He is also survived by two very special ladies, Kim Lehman and Susie Houser.

Urner was a great businessman and owner of Penn-Mar Motors, an auto dealership in LaVale. He was the oldest member of McCoole VFW, a 50 year member of the Cumberland Masons and Ali Ghan Shriners, and attended the Centre Street United Methodist Church for over 50 years.

In World War II he was in the Signal Corps.  In that capacity, he was among those who guided the Enola Gay back from its bombing of Hiroshima. 

Urner's passion was working on his beautiful house on Dan's Mountain that he and his wife Violet bought in the early 1950s. He also had a love for music; especially the organ, harmonica, and piano, which he learned to play by ear.

Friends will be received at Hafer Funeral Service, P.A. – Chapel of the Hills, 1302 National Highway, LaVale, MD, on Saturday, January 25, from 11 am to 1 pm with
funeral services at 1 pm with Pastor Sherrill Dillon officiating.

Interment will follow in Rose Hill Cemetery, Cumberland, MD.

Pallbearers are Mark Stewart, Scott Stewart, Gary Shears, Ronald Stahlman, Chris Kaufman, William Jones and Steve Herell. Honorary pallbearers are William Stewart, Jack Kolovstad and Colin Dietrick.

In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations, in Urner's name, be made to WMHS Home Hospice, 1050 W. Industrial Blvd., Cumberland, MD 21502

Urner was a class act. He was friendly with Dr E O Cook, my Father, for many years and was always courtly and great company. I accompanied them on many outings.
