Jim Mahoney Obituary

Jim Mahoney

May 21, 1942 - June 16, 2025

James (Jim, Jimmy) Joseph Mahoney, 83, was sent to his eternal home on June 16, 2025. Jim, a genuine, humorous, caring person, believed strongly that we are placed in this world to learn to love and lived his life accordingly. He was married to Anne, his Anam Cara, for 62 years, a life-long relationship which budded when both were the tender age of 13. They have 5 children (Allison, Martin, Stephen, Sharon, and James) and 8 grandchildren (Stephanie, AJ, Grace, Nora, Sophie, Kiera, Stephen, and Zoey).

Jim was born to Irish immigrants on May 21, 1942 in Manhattan and grew up in the Bronx. He is a graduate of Manhattan College and Wagner College. He is a Certified Public Accountant with a Master's Degree in Business Administration. In New York City, he was a Hospital Administrator and a University Professor. He belonged to many non-profit boards including the Urban League and the Jacques Marchais Museum of Tibetan Art. After 25 years of living on Staten Island, he moved to Waynesboro, Virginia, in 1990.

In Waynesboro, he was a health and life insurance agent, an investment advisor, a college administrator, and a teacher. Jim was the first New York City-born Irish Catholic to become President of the Rotary Club of Waynesboro. He was an award-winning Big Brother for many years and was the President and Vice President of the Board of Disciples Kitchen, as well as serving as the Chairman of the Valley Community Services Board. He was also on the Board of the Valley Pastoral Counseling. In addition to being on the Parish Council, Jim was the Coordinator of Ushers at St. John the Evangelist Roman Catholic Church where he also taught religious education and was a trustee of the Knights of Columbus. He was also a member of Men with a Mission and That Man is You. He was also active in the Rotary's mentoring program at William Perry Elementary School.

As founder of the networking group Connecting to Success, he helped many people expand their businesses by a systematic method for obtaining new clients.

He published a novel, The Secrets of Little Saints, chronicling his early childhood antics in a humorous fashion, for which he was featured author of the Virginia Festival of the Book in 2013.

Jim prayed for the grace and love of God and wishes the same for all who read this. The family will receive friends at McDow Funeral Home (1701 W Main St, Waynesboro, VA 22980) on Wednesday, June 25, 2025 from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. This will be followed by a Funeral Mass at St. John the Evangelist Roman Catholic Church (301 Sheppard Ct, Waynesboro, VA 22980) on Thursday, June 26, 2025 at 11:00 a.m. Contributions in Jim's memory may be made to the Augusta Health Shenandoah House (https://www.augustahealth.com/foundation/) in lieu of flowers.

Jim was a kind and compassionate soul who carried himself with unwavering authority. He mentored many-myself included-and played a vital role in both my business and personal life. He was truly a legend, and I feel deeply blessed to have known him.

May God bring comfort to his family during this time of profound sorrow.

As Scripture reminds us, "To be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord." Jim now knows no more pain, no more sorrow-only perfect peace.
