ALICE MISKIMIN Obituary

MISKIMIN, ALICE S. Alice S. Miskimin died peacefully at home, just as she had wished, on June 14th, 2016. Alice, or Sunny as she was known since childhood, was 84. Alice is survived by her son, Matt, daughter-in-law, Maria, and by two grandsons, Patrik and Edward, whom all live in Sweden. Alice was a woman of formidable intellect, strong opinions, and deep loyalties. Though her family moved often during her childhood, once she came to New Haven for graduate school, she stayed -- living in her Woodbridge home for nearly 60 years, surrounded by plants, music and books covering interests ranging from archaeology, medieval literature, evolution and genetics, as well as the latest spy and detective novels. After completing her undergraduate studies at Vassar, Alice got her PhD at Yale in English and was a lecturer in Old and Middle English Literature at Yale for many years. Later she went on to get her law degree from Yale and started a new career as a trial lawyer and partner at Jacobs, Grudberg, Belt, Dow & Katz in New Haven and justice of the peace, and police commissioner in Woodbridge. After her retirement Alice read for Recording for the Blind and Dyslexic for many years and was engaged in many civic activities in New Haven. She was a founder of the Professional Women’s Dinner Club, sang tenor in the choir of the United Church on the Green, continuing her life-long love of music, and was a member of Amity Village in HomeHaven. Continuing a passion started with her father in childhood, she was a rabid fan of baseball (the Mets) and horse racing. A memorial service is planned for 2 o’clock on Sunday, the 9th of October, at the United Church on the Green, followed by a reception with coffee, tea, and reminiscences at the Graduate Club, 155 Elm Street. Please contact Jane Jervis at [email protected] to indicate interest in joining us at the Graduate Club.
