ANGELO TOMASSO Obituary

TOMASSO, ANGELO, JR. Angelo Tomasso, Jr., lifelong resident of New Britain, Connecticut, and World War II veteran, passed away on September 18, 2015, surrounded by his family. Born in New Britain on St. Patrick’s Day 1925, Angelo was the proud son of Italian immigrants -the late Angelo and Nazzarena (Briganti) Tomasso. Angelo attended St. Thomas Seminary and graduated from New Britain Senior High School in 1943. He joined the U.S. Navy and served as a petty officer in communications in the Amphibious Corps. During World War II, he was stationed in the South Pacific, the China Sea and the Philippines, proudly serving his country on USS LST 925. Angelo was awarded the Military Order of the Purple Heart for injuries received during the liberation of the Philippine Islands in the Battle of Luzon. After honorable discharge, he attended Naval Officers Training School at Auburn University in Alabama, earning a Bachelor of Science in civil engineering. Angelo remained a strong supporter of Auburn throughout his life (WAR EAGLE!), and it was there that he met the love of his life, Joy. Angelo and Joy were married in June of 1952, and soon returned to New Britain where they started their family. Upon his return to New Britain, Angelo began a long and distinguished career in the construction industry. He worked as general superintendent of Angelo Tomasso, Inc. After the passing of his father, he became president and Chief Executive Officer of the company until it merged in 1971 with Ashland Construction Co. Angelo subsequently became vice president of Ashland until 1979 when Tilcon, Inc. purchased the company. He later became Tilcon’s president and CEO until 1990 when he assumed the chairmanship. During his career and also well into retirement, Angelo served on numerous committees and boards, generously giving his time and talents for the betterment of his beloved community. He was a director of the Connecticut Bank Federation, the New Britain Bank and Trust Company and the Connecticut Natural Gas Corporation. Angelo was also a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 511, the Generale Ameglio M.B. Society, the Elks Lodge #957, the American Society of Civil Engineers, the Disabled American Veterans, and the NAACP. He was a trustee of St. Ann Church, chairman of the National Conference of Christians and Jews and the Founder, director and past President of The Hundred Club of Connecticut. He served as a board member of the New Britain Boys & Girls Club, and was a 50-year board member of New Britain General Hospital (currently THOCC), where he served as Chairman for many years. In recognition of his civic accomplishments, Central Connecticut State University conferred an honorary doctorate of humane letters on Angelo in 1990. Throughout the years, Angelo received numerous civic awards, including the National Jewish Hospital and Research Center Humanitarianism Award in 1978, New Britain Lodge of Elks Citizen of the Year in 1986, the Golden Lion Award from the Order of the Sons of Italy in 1988. In 1996 the Connecticut Association of Street & Highway Officials honored Angelo with the Royal W. Thompson Lifetime Achievement Award. Angelo was a loving, honest, generous and loyal man who relished life, and will be dearly missed every day. In his younger years, Angelo loved to fly and was an instrument-rated pilot. He treated everyone the same, regardless of their station in life. He is survived by his devoted wife Joy, and they were blessed with six children: Michael Tomasso and his wife Linda, Nancy Tomasso, Paul Tomasso, James Tomasso, William Tomasso and his partner Mary Anne, and Carol Tomasso Ficks and her husband Carl Ficks, Jr. Angelo’s family, especially his eight grandchildren Joseph, David, Albert, Amy Love, Edward, Lucy, Leia and Sarah Joy, were truly the light of his life, with whom he loved to travel and spend time; he is also survived by his sister, Lucia Tomasso Scheer and her husband Dr. Edward H. Scheer, sisters-in-law Jean Palmer, Jane Miller, Sandra Shaw Tomasso and Vicky Tomasso, nephews Edward H. Scheer, Jr. and his wife Antonia, Victor P. Tomasso, and beloved Abate and Briganti cousins. Angelo also leaves his cousins, the Di Pierdomenico families in Abbateggio, Italy. His brothers Victor, George and William predeceased him. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, September 23, 2015 at 10:00am at St. Ann Church, 101 North Street, New Britain. Family and friends are invited to go directly to church. Visitation hours will be Tuesday, September 22, 2015 from 3:00-7:00pm at New Britain Memorial Donald D. Sagarino Funeral Home, 444 Farmington Ave., New Britain. A private burial will be at the convenience of the family. Donations in Angelo’s memory may be made to the New Britain Boys and Girls Club (www.bgclubnb.org). I started working for Mr. Tomasso in 1979. I have so much respect for him. He always showed us respect even tho he was our boss. It was a very sad day when he retired. A lot of us hoped he would come back "home". I have fond memories of the early days of my employment at Tomasso/N.H.T.R., and then Tilcon. To see the brothers together; Angelo, Vic, and Bill; those were the days of honest to goodness great employers. The life lessons from them; hard work, caring, giving, compassion, and all on equal grounds. There was also Billy coming to work with us, driving a low-bed. So impressed by all of the family. One of the last times I spoke with Angelo was at Tunxis. We were paving the cart paths, and along comes a large golf cart with Angelo and a bunch of kids. He told me they were his grandson and his friends. He was so proud to be with them. I happened to have my camera, and took a couple pictures. I am truly going to miss chance encounters with Angelo around town.

I was at the wake but had to leave before I got in. I was devastated that I couldn't pay my respects. Angelo meant a lot to me. One of my co-workers told me the next day not to worry, Angelo knew I was there. When I went back to the plant to get another load of asphalt, coming down Corbin Ave., I was stopped at Shuttle Meadow Rd. for the entourage to go to the church. I got tears in my eyes thinking what were the chances of that happening. And how fitting that one of Angelo's [I still think of it as his] trucks is there. Later in the day, coming from the plant, on Black Rock Ave., here comes the entourage again on Wooster St. Again, what are the chances! Thank you Angelo!

He is the most loved and respected man, and family, that I know. It has been an honor. I am so sincerely sorry for your loss.

Mrs Tomasso and Family:
Joy, my heartfelt condolences to you and the entire Tomasso family. Angelo and your family were always there for our family over the years and it will never be forgotten. Angelo never forgot his roots as a working man and his humility and kindness stand in tribute to the greatness of his character. The first time I met Angelo was when I was working as a shovel operator on a paving crew almost 40 years ago when he showed up at the job in the infamous green Mercury - sweat drenched and my hand greasy and dirty I was hesitant as he reached out and clenched my hand in a firm handshake and thanked me for my hard work. The true embodiment of Caring Leadership - the world has lost a true giant among men.

To the Tomasso family, You are all in my thoughts in this time of great sadness. Your father was a man of vision, of family and of grace. He was kind, soft-spoken, generous with his time and affection. I was honored to be friends with Michael and Carol, Paul's classmate at Mooreland Hill, Nancy's law school classmate, Billy's babysitter, and the brunt of Jimmy's pranks during carpool! Your mother has remained a constant in my life, always finding time to visit when I am back home. Your dad was loved dearly and his passing shook this West Coast transplant more than any earthquake!

"To the world you are just one person but to one person you are the world"
Mr. Tomasso had such a gift to make each person whose path he crossed, feel like that. Working for him and his family was a gift and those I met while doing so were truly individual blessings and I thank him for that.
May God bless him and his family and rest assured his legacy of respect, kindness and genuine compassion will most certainly live on.
Thank you...for the lessons and the memories.

We are sad for the Tomasso family. They are the best that life has to offer the world and Angelo was a very big part of what makes this family so special. His kindness, foresight, leadership skills and compassion for those around him have been a role model for me and will not diminish with his passing. For all of the difficulties that we face individually and as a society each day...we should pause to offer thanks for the wonderful bright moments in life such as Angelo Tomasso. Mr. and Mrs. Tomasso and family were our neighbors years back and have been a presence in New Britain ever since I can remember, helping so many families and the community. I've had the pleasure of knowing the family and being able to call them some of my favorite people.

I've forever admired Angelo and Joy's commitment to their family and their community, and the grace and dignity in which they contribute. Leading by example, each and every one of Angelo's children has continued to put so much good into the world as he and Joy did. He was humbly proud of his legacy and his family, rightfully so.

Angelo had a great life and I'm sad to see the end of an era which cant be duplicated to replace such a genuine,
authentic, kind and compassionate man. I've always been grateful to know the Tomasso family and have high respect
for each and every one of them. Everyone I've ever known has always felt the same way. Angelo and his family are rare in this day and age, and any day and age, truly humane, compassionate, caring people that to his honor have always given back and supported so many causes.

May Angelo rest in peace and his family take comfort in the foundation and memories they've created. A truly honorable gentlemen, Mr. Tomasso had such a huge heart and such compassion for others, you will be deeply missed by many. Rest in peace.

With Deepest Sympathy,
Maryann Kassey

My husband worked for Mr. Tomasso as a teenager cleaning his offiice after school. Whenever the topic of what we all did as our first jobs, my husband would reminisce about how kind Mr. Tomasso was to him. Letting him take a nap on his couch after his school day before doing his chores. Today we learn that they shared a birthday.
On March 10, 2013, our son Christopher H. Rogan died in service to our country after a deployment to Afghanistan. Mr. Tomasso, a kingpin of our community, at the age of 87, stood in line refusing to cut the line, at our son's wake on 3-17-13, his and my husband birthday. As he came through the line to offer his sympathies to our berieved family, he was genuinally heartbroken for our loss, as we are today for his family. God bless him and his family. We know that Christopher was saluting this humble hero as he went through the gates of heaven.

Angelo was the heart and soul of St. Ann Parish for so many years - Fr. Giusani's right-hand man. I will forever remember in my time as a newly ordained parochial vicar all that Angelo did, quietly, behind the scenes, without fanfare or recognition, for his church and parish. I can remember him asking Fr. Giusani on numerous occasions 'What does the church need?' and it would always be taken care of. No one had a bigger, more giving heart than Angelo.
My condolences to you, Joy, and to his family, and we place our trust in the fact that the God Angelo worshiped so faithfully every Sunday at 7:00 has taken him to Himself where we shall, one day, be reunited for all eternity. May God bless you in this time of loss.
