She was born on Wooster Street in New Haven, Connecticut on June 15, 1927, the eldest daughter of the late Frank and Amelia (Carofano) Proto. She later resided in the Morris Cove Section of New Haven, Woodbridge and Cheshire. She is survived by her sister Grace (Anthony, deceased) Iovene of Cheshire, her brother Dominic (Antoinette) of Woodbridge, her 6 nieces and nephews; Rosemary (Stephen) DiMugno of Cheshire, Michael (Kate) Iovene of Cheshire, Frank Proto of North Branford, Susan (Michael) Lombardi of Wallingford, Louis (Kathryn) Proto of Bethany and Paul (Marcia) Proto of Wallingford, as well as 14 grand nieces and nephews and 7 great grand nieces and nephews, all of whom were near and dear to her. Ann was a pioneer and a role model to many woman as a career business woman at a time when few such educated and talented woman occupied these roles. She attended Fair Street School, Columbus and Commercial High School and Stone Business School all in New Haven. She held positions as an executive secretary and executive assistant at the Berger Brothers Company, the Asgrow Seed Company a division of Monsanto, the Rudnick Division of The Hills Department Stores and the Town of Woodbridge Human Services Department. She was a proud recipient of the Saint Andrew Apostle Society's Community Service Award which was extra special for her as she was the granddaughter of one of its founding members Domenico Proto. Ann was intensely loyal to her family and sacrificed much during her life for her family. She was a devoted daughter who cared for and lived with her parents until their passing. Ann was an integral part of each of the lives of her nieces and nephews serving as a babysitter, guardian, chaperone, tutor, disciplinarian, teacher, consoler and friend from their infancy right through the time of her passing. Her spirit will live on in each of them as well as in their children and grandchildren. The family would like to take this opportunity to thank ALL of the staff of Masonicare for the kind and compassionate care they gave to Ann most especially the Nurses, aides and staff on Ramage 4 (with heartfelt thanks to Michelle and Renee) and on ACU 3.
