Anne Curtis Obituary

Anne McBride Curtis, MD
Anne McBride Curtis, MD, Professor Emeritus, Radiology and Biomedical Imaging, Yale University School of Medicine died peacefully at her home May 11, 2025. Anne was born to Helen Kingsbury Curtis and Herbert Pelham Curtis in 1942. She grew up in New Caanan, Connecticut and attended Milton Academy, Radcliffe College, and Yale School of Medicine. Following her residency and fellowship, Anne joined the faculty in 1975, becoming a tenured professor in 1985. A pioneering woman in medicine, she served as Director of the Office for Women in Medicine and as Chair of the Committee on the Status of Women in the School of Medicine. In 1990, she was awarded the Leah Lowenstein award, the first Radiologist to be so honored, for promoting humane and egalitarian medical education. Her training of countless medical students, residents, and fellows is a legacy that endures. She was acting Chair of the Department of Radiology in the late 1980s, Section Chief of Thoracic Imaging for more than two decades, and Vice Chair for clinical affairs of the Department. She also served as an active member of the residency selection committee right up until this past matching cycle, advocating for robust and exceptional training programs.
When not practicing or teaching medicine, Annie truly loved gathering family and friends at the summer home for long sessions in the kitchen with many cooks and boisterous conversations around the table. These conversations often circled around her love of travel, opera, animals, books, science, research, and politics. Anne was the picture of decency, humility, and kindness which shines even brighter when we consider her professional success.
Anne was predeceased by her husband, James J. Fischer, MD, and her 3 siblings: F. Kingsbury Curtis, MD of Bainbridge Island, WA, Francis Curtis Hardie of Pittsburgh, PA, and John Pelham Curtis, MD of Millerton, NY. Anne was much loved by her nieces and nephews: Douglas, Spencer, Charlie, Helen, Hiller, Janet, Andy, Michael, Rachel, Ellen, Sarah, and Jeptha and their families. Anne leaves behind 2 stepchildren, Brad and Wendy; as well as six grandchildren Elizabeth, Caroline, Teddy, Charlie, Ashley, and Emma; and her beloved Havanese Kiri.
A memorial service will be held on Friday, May 23 at 10:00 a.m. at Trinity on the Green, 230 Temple St., New Haven, CT, followed by a reception at the New Haven Lawn Club.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Neighborhood Music School, New Haven, Connecticut where Anne served many years on the Board. To Wendy and Brad and their families and the Curtis family,

I had the privilege of getting to know Anne when she married Jim Fischer. I was his medical secretary and later his administrative assistant for more than 30 years. I was made to feel like part of the family in many ways and admired and appreciated their friendship, generosity and kindness so much. I have so many wonderful memories of times we spent together and our love for our Havanese pups. I'm so glad I had the opportunity to talk to her by phone recently. My only regret is that we didn't have a chance to meet for lunch as we had planned. She will be missed.

About a year ago, I introduced myself to Anne Curtis, our neighbor on Lincoln St., because Joanne Bailey told me she lived alone. I only knew of Anne that she was one of the most talented drs to work and teach at Yale New Haven Hospital and a friend of one of my friends. I knocked on her door. When we talked, I learned we shared a love of horses and dancing.

I took her out for a day to see Richard Morrow's horses in Guilford. We were left breathless by his Friezian- the most beautiful horse either of us had ever seen. We rubbed the necks of all the horses and fed them but agreed that our riding days were over. "Too far to fall." said Anne. She also met and talked with Richard, himself, and we briefly discussed dancing at Arthur Murray in Guilford.

Later, I invited Anne to come to the Valentine's Day dancing party and she said she would, but she thought it was Saturday instead of Friday. So she missed it.

I also invited her to the April 6th dance extravaganza at Bill Miller´s Castle. She came very late and was embarrassed that she hadn't understood the 'dress code'.

Her nephew drove her there and they were delightful company. She danced a dance with one of the young professional dancers. I didn't hear too much about it but I was so very pleased that she was asked to dance and that she did.

I had no idea at the time that she was enduring a long and terminal cancer. She never said anything about it to me. She certainly did not seem in any way slowed down.

I feel honored to have spent some quality time with her the day we went to see the horses and then sat at Belle Vie cafe under the umbrellas as friends stopped by to talk about how to promote a big public art project. She had good ideas.

Finally, I am deeply gratified that she danced her last dance at an extravaganza in Bill Miller´s Castle and I was there.

I was blessed to have worked for Anne in the Radiology Department. As her family says- "Anne was the picture of decency, humility, and kindness". That is truly an understatement. She was a remarkable woman, an exceptional and respected physician and an amazing friend. I am truly heartbroken to hear of her passing. I will remember her always and am a better person having known her.
