Anthony Morro Obituary

MORRO, ANTHONY L. " CHICO" Anthony L. (Chico) Morro, Retired Detective, Branford PD, of Hamden, died September 20, 2013 at the St. Raphael Campus of Yale New Haven Hospital. He was the loving husband of Sylvia A. Carbone Morro. Anthony was born in New Haven April 5, 1940 to the late Pasquale and Maria Bucci Morro. Known to all his friends as "Chico", he grew up in the Hill section of New Haven where he attended Sacred Heart School and as an altar boy at Sacred Heart Church. He established himself as an excellent ball player, playing on the championship Sacred Heart teams in the parochial league. He attended Notre Dame High School where he played baseball and football. In the summer months he played Babe Ruth ball and also on the J. Johnson & Sons championship teams. A lover of baseball, he not only played American Legion ball but also played for the Sacred Heart Yanks from the Hill. After he graduated school he worked for both the Flanagan and New Haven Ambulance Services. From 1960-1962 Chico served with the US Army as a machine gunner with the 8th Infantry Division. In 1964 he joined the Woodbridge Police Dept. he was also a member of the Penn Central RR Police. In 1970 he joined the Branford Police Dept. where he distinguished himself with many commendations. In 1972 he received the Medal of Merit after witnessing a shooting and then chasing down the suspect without regard for his own life. He was promoted to Detective in 1986 and worked on several high profile murder cases. Anthony retired in April, 2001 after 31 years of service. Besides his wife Sylvia he is survived by his sister Therese Esposito of Branford, many nieces, great nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brother Pasquale (Bunny) Morro, Jr. whom he called his hero. His funeral will leave the IOVANNE FUNERAL HOME, INC., 11 Wooster Pl., Monday morning at 9:30 for a Mass of Christian Burial in St. Joan of Arc Church, Hamden at 10. Burial will follow in St. Lawrence Cemetery. Visiting hours will be Sunday from 3-7pm.
