Barbara Lynch Obituary

LYNCH, BARBARA J. Barbara J. Lynch, of Branford, CT, devoted wife of J. Edward Lynch, died at home surrounded by her family on May 20, 2012, her 80th year. Born in New Haven, April 9, 1933, she was the daughter of the late Daniel and Edith Jennette; beloved mother of Jay, Danny, Gary, Peter, Greg, David (d.), Steven, Stefanie, Polly and their spouses; beloved grandmother of 13 grandchildren; and sister of Peter and David Jennette. She earned a Bachelor's degree in mathematics and psychology, Cum Laude, in 1954, from Central Connecticut State University. She received a Master's degree in counseling and school psychology in 1972 from Southern Connecticut State University, and a PhD in counseling psychology from Heed University of Florida in 1975. Barbara was a Professor Emeritus at Southern Connecticut State University, where she was the founder and director of the family therapy clinic and chair of the Department of Marriage and Family Therapy. In addition, she brought the practice of structural family therapy to the university system of France. She was a past president of the Association of Marriage and Family Therapy. She was also a consultant to the New Haven Probate Court and numerous hospitals and clinics in Connecticut. She served on several boards as well. She was the author of several books, book chapters and professional journal and magazine articles. For many years, she also had a private therapy practice and conducted numerous therapy groups. Barbara was also an avid beader and jewelry-maker, who co-founded the Connecticut Bead Society and opened The Bead Hive, a retail store in Guilford. Her beadwork has appeared in numerous national and international beading magazines, and she has won a variety of awards for her beadwork. Among her passions were the Connecticut seashore, her therapy dog Madison, reading, travel, and holding court. She never met a story she couldn't embellish. She spent her last week eating oysters, ice cream sundaes, and hotdogs; making her way through every last catalog; answering emails; and making sure she looked good for her departure. She left this world with much love, dignity, style and a whole lot of laughs. Family and friends may call at the LUPINSKI FUNERAL HOME at 821 State Street in New Haven, on WEDNESDAY evening from 4pm-7pm. A Prayer service will be held at 7 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation at 811 West Evergreen Ave., Suite 204, Chicago IL 60642 http://www.pulmonaryfibrosis.org/donate or the Barbara J. We just learned today of Barbara's passing. She was a very special person and professional. It has been 16 years since we worked with her and I was thinking this morning of something she had said to us.
She had a profound impact on us and as a result of her help and guidance we have 2 wonderful daughters. We could never thank her enough.
Our thoughts are with her family. Know that she will always be a special part of our life

Dear Ed and Family,
I am just learning of the transitioning of Barbara. I loved her very much, as so many of us (students/former students) did. I shared with her that my only desire was to sit at her feet and drink of her knowledge. She was an awesome human being and "teacher".I know I am a better person,as well as therapist for having crossed paths with her, and shared in this journey called life with her. She will be surly missed, but will remain in my heart. The profession of Marriage & Family Therapy has lost a true visionary and pioneer.
Love and peace,
Katurah (Bryant, LMFT)

Dear Ed and family,

I was saddened to hear of the loss of Barbara and my heartfelt condolences go out to all of you. As I think of her influences on me, I realize that a week doesn't go by in my therapy practice when I don t pull out a "Barbara-ism" to use with a client like "make the covert overt" or "don't take it personally unless you have to". Along with your "Ed-isms", I'm grateful for both of your influences in my training. Peace to you all.

Dear Greg and Family,
My condolences on the passing of your Mother and Grandmother. What a marvelously gifted individual Barbara was with a real thirst for enjoying life. She raised an enormous family, and the memories of her will get you all through this very sad time. She will live on in family stories that will be passed down through generations, not even needing embellishment - a true legend.

A Candle for Barbara

Sandra & Anthony Rigazio-DiGilio

May 22, 2012

Dear Ed and Family:

Words fail. We are truly sorry for your loss and pray for Barbara's safe return home.

We lit a candle for her. It will burn in our home for seven days. My Nonni shared this belief with us. The candle shines a light that connects those who are finding their way home to the people on earth who are waving goodbye until their loved one is finally there, where others, already passed, have set a place at the table for them.

In our family, we also believe that another journey begins at the end of worldly existence. We hope Barbara's path stretches far beyond the life we can only imagine to a place where the trials of her life are resolved . . . where the love you shared provides her shelter and peace . . . and where her soul will surely find a way to the light.

We hope you and yours are finding comfort in all the special ways you have learned to in your life's journey.
