Barry Vine Obituary

Barry Jack Vine
Barry Jack Vine, 80, passed away on Thursday, August 8, 2024.
Son of Israel H. Vine and Lillian Vine (Shemonsky), Barry was born on August 10, 1943 in New Haven, CT. His childhood was indelibly tied to the rich community life on Legion Avenue, a home for which he always felt a deep kinship. He graduated from Hillhouse High School in 1961, before earning his Bachelor's from New York University. Always an entrepreneur since the days he sold jewelry to his classmates in elementary school, Barry opened his own business, Vine Products, while concurrently attending Columbia University for an MBA. Barry grew Vine Products into a thriving business, where his employees were like family. Though he enjoyed traveling, music, collecting art, and fine dining, Barry never forgot his roots. He retained a deep nostalgia and connection to the neighborhood where he grew up, and was known by all for his generosity. Barry was a community leader and lodestar, celebrated for his ever-ready willingness to pitch in and do his part (or more than his part!). Fundraising was a true passion for him and, in 2004, he founded and spearheaded the Barry J. Vine Send a Kid to Camp Fund, where he raised money for disadvantaged children to attend summer camp, an experience that was deeply meaningful to him as a former scholarship child.
Jokes were the way to Barry's heart, as was apple pie, ice cream, deli food, and hamburgers. He showed his love with food and gifts; it wasn't unusual for him to find a choice item on sale and order one hundred of them, to be donated for charitable purposes.
He was preceded in death by his mother and father, his beloved daughter, Aviva, and numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins. He is survived by his wife, Hyla Vine, and their daughters, Ilana Larkin (Andrea) of Evanston, IL, and Glenna Fried (Joseph) of Cheshire, CT, and granddaughters, Gemma and Willa Larkin.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be sent to the Jewish Family Service, Food Pantry, the Towers at Tower Lane, or the Jewish Community Center. To keep Barry's spirit alive, the family asks that you do one kind thing every day.

Barry was an original, a one of a kind Mr. Mitzvah, who truly made the world a better place, his personal Tikkun Olum project. He is surely organizing Heaven on a daily basis with care and love.

The world lost a tremendous ray of sunshine, lots of laughter, and a loving and giving man who gave the name "mensch" a special distinction. May his memory ever be for a blessing.

My sincere condolences to Hyla and Barry's entire family. I had the privilege of being the caregiver for the family dog Houdini.
Barry was kind to humans and animals. With his generosity he supported The Woodbridge Dog Park, getting it off the ground and he remained in touch with former Animal Control Officer Judy Reddig. No doubt he spreading his kindness in heaven.

I am deeply grateful to have experienced the love, laughter and generosity that the one-of-a-kind Barry Vine shared with everyone he knew. From being the gentle giant who treated me like his third daughter-often trying to convince waiters that I was a 5-foot-tall triplet alongside his 6-foot daughters-to good-naturedly tolerating me sneaking home in the trunk of his car, crashing family vacations, and championing me throughout adulthood, Barry was a constant presence in every chapter of my life. His absence is already profoundly felt, and his kindness, silliness, and the light he brought into the world will be missed by all who loved and knew him.

Barry was the best of this community.

Dear Hyla and daughters,

I am saddened to hear about Barry´s passing. I will always have fond memories of his effervescent personality and great business sense.

My late sister Maureen (Pero) Cellini worked for Barry for many years. I am sure they are greeting one another with a big hug.

May his memory always be a blessing
In sympathy,
Michele (Pero) Gregorio
