Chester Mrowka Obituary

Rev. Chester Mrowka
1927 - 2024
Reverend Chester Roch Mrowka, CM, 97 years old, was born in New Haven, Connecticut on June 22, 1927. He was the sixth son of Frank and Rose (Koszewska) Mrowka. Besides his parents, his brothers Benny, Walter, Steve, Joe and Bill, pre-deceased him. Also, beloved nieces and nephews pre-deceased him.
After his service in the Navy during World War II, he prepared for priestly ordination at the Vincentian Seminary of Mary Immaculate in Northampton, Pennsylvania. He was ordained on May 23, 1959, by Bishop John A. O'Shea, CM, the exiled Bishop of Kanchow, China. This year, Father Chester observed his 65th anniversary as a priest.
His priestly ministry took him from his parish life in Brooklyn, New York, and Ansonia, Connecticut, to seventeen years of teaching at St. John Kanty Preparatory School in Erie, Pennsylvania. After a brief stint of study in Rome, Italy, he returned to Kanty as Rector of the School and Superior of the Religious Community, which staffed the school.
Completing his term of office at Kanty Prep, Father Chester became pastor of St. Joseph's Parish in Ansonia, Connecticut, for four years. From there, he was assigned as Pastor of St. Peter's Parish in Concord, New Hampshire.
After four years at St. Peter's, Father Chester returned to Connecticut, following his election to serve as the Provincial of the New England Vincentian Community. After completion of his maximum nine-year term of office, he was appointed to serve as the Provincial Treasurer for the next twelve years.
While residing at the new DePaul Residence of the Vincentian Community in Manchester, Connecticut, he regularly assisted at the nearby Assumption Parish for nearly fifteen years. At the age of 80, health conditions required Father Chester to retire from all duties, and he remained at the Provincial Residence until the end of his life. Father Chester died on July 5, 2024.
A time of visitation will be on Tuesday, July 9, at 10:30 a.m., at the Little Sisters of the Poor, Saint Joseph Residence, 1365 Enfield St., Enfield, CT. A Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 11:00 a.m. Burial will be at All Saints Cemetery, North Haven, CT. The John F. Tierney Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Fr. Chet taught our 9th grade German class (1975) at Kanty Prep. His big saying was there are three things in life you can rely and count on...Michelin Tires, Lay-Z-Boy chairs and the Kanty Prep Lottery. (I guess you had to be there...). I kept in touch with he and Fr Ed and Brother Joe until each of their passing. Good men all. They made a difference. RIP at the right hand of our Lord Jesus Christ. Now and Forever.

Fr Chet was my teacher, mentor, and confessor at St John Kanty Prep, 1963-67. May his soul and all the souls of the faithfully departed rest in peace.

My condolences to the Mrowka Family and The Vincentian Community on the passing of Father Chet. I knew him from New Haven at St. Stans parish. I also knew him at St John Kanty Prep were I went to school. He was sort of a mentor to me helping me getting accustom to boarding school . He also kept me busy doing different jobs around the school. In the fall he took me to the peninsula to teach me how to drive with all the beach goers gone. I have many fond memories of him. May You Rest In peace.

With a heavy heart, I will always cherish the good memories of my uncle. He was always there for me during my best and challenging times. Always encouraged me, and was thankful for everything I did for him and my dad. I feel very blessed to have had him through out my life. Rest in eternal peace, one day we will meet again. As he always ended our conversations, God bless...

Fr. Chet was our parish Pastor at St. Joseph's in Ansonia. I remember him as a kind, soft-spoken man. I'm praying my Mom and Dad were there to welcome to Heaven.

My uncle Father Chet was a very kind man and soft spoken. He is now with the Christ, his siblings and parents. He is finally home.

Fr. Chet went all the way to the Homestead resort in Virginia to recruit me to come to Kanty Prep in Erie, Pa. all the way from Houston. (at my Dad's urging>another Kanty alumnus) They had just resumed football again after many years and hired Coach Barney Rutkowski to put a team together again, along with his faithful assistant Gary Garn. They were both a lot of fun to play for even though we didn't win as many games as prior (and subsequent) Kanty powerhouses. I still recall Fr. Chet's pep talks before games, "Well, at least try not to lose on our home field." We did try anyway. :) R I P Fr. Chet.

Father Chester was very kind, and with a quick smile. My favorite memory of him was his sharing of how the Blessed Virgin Mary guided him in his vocation. Requiescat in pace.
