I´ve been very lucky in my life, having been raised by two very loving parents, Ruth and Barney, who were so busy working and raising four children that they were not always available to me. But my Uncle Dave was always there for me, with realistic advice, unfailing encouragement, and, once in a while, a few bucks!
Dave was my mother´s younger brother. She adored and respected him and so did I. When he got back from serving our country in World War II, he was a quiet man, as were many of his compatriots who didn´t want to burden their families with the horrors they had suffered. But in spite of that, Dave took over his father´s business of selling curtains, bedspreads, et al, in his own store in the middle of downtown New Haven and managed to generously support his family--his beautiful wife Dorothy and his children Howard and Bonnie--both of whom have gone on to wonderful family lives and successful careers.
But unbeknownst to just about everyone in our family, Dave left work every day and went to his mother´s house (the famous Bubby Fanny) to spend time with her, take her on errands, and generally keep her happy after her beloved husband Abraham had died.
And to my absolute astonishment, Dave had kept voluminous scrapbooks--over 12 of them--of all of my own athletic ventures in Hillhouse High School and Dartmouth College, which he gave me as a gift several years ago, and which I still pore over when I´m in the mood to reminisce.
Dave was a prince among men, the embodiment of loyalty to our country and love for his family...through actions far more than words. He was the essence of the decency of character of the American man of the Greatest Generation.
Joan and I still miss Dave to this day, and cherish the memories we have of this wonderful, caring, loving, and extraordinary man.

Uncle Dave it's so sad that you had to leave us but we know you'll be playing the trumpet in very good company. Let the angels sing. Blessed Be and Rest in Peace my sweet Uncle Dave. Love always and forever, as your sister and my mom use to say. Mindy
