Eiji Yanagisawa Obituary

Eiji Yanagisawa, MD, FACS
Feb 01, 2024
Eiji Yanagisawa, of Woodbridge, CT, passed away peacefully on February 1, 2024 at the age of 93. Born in Yokohama, Japan, he came to the United States in 1956, and embarked on his remarkable journey fueled by inspiration and determination, positively influencing a myriad number of patients, physicians, and friends around the globe.
He was predeceased by his loving wife and eternal companion, June, whom he married in 1960. A devoted father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, he is survived by his four children and their families: Dr. Ken Yanagisawa (and Dr. Julia Shi, grandchildren Dr. Katie (and Dr. Ben Slocum), Michael (and Kristen), Mark (and Shauna Strubinger), Jonathan, Kevin, and great-grandchildren Fallon and Quinn); Kay Yanagisawa (and Richard Evanko, grandchild Matthew); Amy Yanagisawa (and Rob Wilkins, grandchild Robert); and Ray Yanagisawa.
He was an avid lifelong New York Mets fan and UConn basketball fan. He loved basking in the tranquility and serenity of his backyard Japanese Garden, which he designed and built in 1973, capturing beautiful nature photographs, especially of his water lilies. He always had his 35mm camera strapped around his neck, ready to capture life's moments and memories, actively participating in the New Haven Camera Club for many years.
His extraordinary Otolaryngological career began at the Nihon University School of Medicine in Japan, followed by acceptance by Dr. John A. Kirchner to the Yale Otolaryngology residency on a Fulbright Scholarship, graduating in 1959. He immediately began practicing medicine in the Greater New Haven area following residency in 1960, with the Southern New England Ear Nose Throat & Facial Plastic Surgery Group, and continued practicing until the age of 83. He had a profound influence on the training and development of over 100 Yale residents from the 1960s to 2010s, promoting clinical research and medical publications, and he gained national and international recognition for his clinical work.
He had a tremendous impact on so many patients in the Greater New Haven area who beloved him. Many patients still recollect his intense dedication and caring, epitomized by his not uncommon postoperative hospital rounds at 2 o'clock in the morning.
He was Clinical Professor of Otolaryngology at Yale University School of Medicine, and received numerous honors including President of the American Broncho-Esophagological Association, Vice President of the Eastern Section of the Triological Society, President of the New England Otolaryngological Society, Chevalier Jackson Award from the ABEA, Presidential Citations from the American Otological Society, American Laryngological Association (twice), Triological Society, and American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery (AAO-HNS). He received Lifetime Achievement Awards from AAO-HNS and the Politzer Society. Due to his excellence in nearly all facets of Otolaryngology, many referred to him as a "Renaissance Man".
He pioneered many medical techniques and was renowned internationally for his documentation of disease states and videographic techniques in otolaryngology, lectured frequently on these subjects, and won many awards for teaching videotapes. He authored or coauthored 356 original articles, 80 book chapters, and 4 books, presented 19 scientific exhibits nationally and abroad, and created 77 teaching videotapes.
Two endowment funds honor and celebrate his contributions to otolaryngology: The Dr. Eiji Yanagisawa Lectureship and Resident Travel Fund at Yale University School of Medicine, and The Eiji Yanagisawa, MD International Visting Scholar (IVS) Endowment at the American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery, which promotes collaboration with international colleagues.
Dr Yanagisawa was kind, gentle, and compassionate to every person he interacted with, and served as a masterful mentor and brilliant instructor, teaching the intricacies and nuances of effective medical and surgical care of patients.
A Memorial Service will be held at a later date to celebrate his amazing life.

I was a patient of Dr. Yanagisawa since I was an infant and for decades thereafter. His waiting room was always full, and as an impatient child I didn´t appreciate its significance at that time. But even then, the wait was always worth it. His smile, kindness, bedside manner, surgical skills and compassion were like no other. He was truly beyond special.
My heart goes out to his family and friends, as I know the loss in your lives is tremendous. May you all find comfort in the memories of joyful times you shared together. Sending love to all.

The most decent human being I've been fortunate to have met and be acquainted with as a patient.

He was thoughtful and kind. Empathetic and understanding. Our world was truly a better place when he was around. He was that unique among men and I miss him.

My heartfelt condolences to his family and all his loved ones

I was a patient of Dr. Yanagisawa's in the 80's and 90's. He literally saved my hearing when I was only a young child. I will never forget how smart, thorough and dedicated he was to my family and I. His standard of care was top notch, one that I try to hold Doctor's I see today to. Most fail. Dr. Yanagisawa made a lasting impression on me. I can only hope that I am able to do the same. Rest peacefully, Dr. Yanagisawa.

Dr. Yanagisawa´s photographs
And teaching materials were an important part of my training and learning in all of my years as an otolaryngologist. I settled in Connecticut and met and attended meetings with him and even once had an opportunity to visit the beautiful and peaceful Japanese garden at his home. There was always a positive "vibe" where he was concerned. I will miss him.

Dr. Eiji Yanagisawa was a superb colleague, a great personal friend and a mentor. He was an excellent surgeon and a compassionate physician. He was an outstanding, consummate and tireless teacher. It would not be hard to pen laudatory pages upon pages. To sum it up: he has the heart as big as the great outdoors. During a Yale resident graduation dinner, one chief resident said, "if I were in a remote place in Alaska, ran into a difficult situation with a patient and can only make one phone call, I would call Dr. Eiji Yanagisawa. No matter what time of the day or what he was doing, he would patiently take me through the case."

Our family was so fortunate to have Eiji as an otolaryngologist. He helped my father hear again with a cadaver transplant after caring for my father´s chronic ear problems, treated a number of my siblings when they were children and became a friend of the family. He was humble, kind, and made his patients feel seen. What a privilege it was to have our lives intersect with his! Our condolences to his family.

Eiji was such a wonderful doctor and person. I remember the night he came to HSR after being shot. I was working on the surgical floor. There was not a dry eye in the hospital.
When caring for him at night I would talk to him. I was a patient of his but at this time a care giver.
He was so very proud of wife, children and photos.
We spoke of his photos whenever I saw them. Gorgeous
My condolences to his family.

Dear Ken and Julia,
I am so sorry to hear this news but what a wonderful and exemplary life he led! The obituary omitted the detail that he truly was Superman, as Michael described him, if I recall.
I spent as afternoon with him looking at tympanic membranes while I was in grad school that helped me to feel confident and competent with ears, that I still am grateful for every working day.
Rest in Peace.

I was a child who had many visits to Dr. Yanagisawa and yet, was never scared because he was always so gentle and caring. He also took care of my father. I always remember him looking at me in shock when I came from college for a check and he saw me with double earrings and he shouted "why do you need more homes in your ears?" I have kept that thought and his smile in my head for all these years because it sits as a memory and reminder to me that there are doctors who do truly care. Dr. Yanagisawa was one of those rare finds. He will be greatly missed. Condolences and sympathies to all of his family and friends.

We always remember Dr. Yanagisawa as a kind and compassionate clinician. He took care of our daughter, and had molds made for her ears so that she would not have to abandon competitive swimming. He even went as far as assisting her in a science project to further understand the placement of tubes in the eardrums. May precious memories keep his love alive in your hearts.

My Mother was a very long time patient of Dr. Yanagisawa. She absolutely idolized him for restoring her hearing. I found out about this operation while working at Yale. She immediately made an appt. to see him. There was no one on earth any better than he. This man brought life and brightness to my Mother and our family. I remember right after the surgery I whispered into my Mother's ear and she said, "Why are you talking so loud!" It was the first time in many years she was able to hear again! He also restored my Aunt's hearing. My thoughts are with you all. You should all be proud of your Dad's accomplishments.

Dr. Y. was the kindest, caring, respectful, joyful, and compassionate doctor. He took great care of my son... 46 years ago... and saved his hearing! If I am correct, he invented the "tubes" for the ears and for this improved and restored my son's hearing at age 4. There are not enough words to say what a beautiful man Dr. Y was, and I will always remember him. --- Marie Serio DellaValle

My sincerest heartfelt condolences to Ken, Kay, Ray, Amy and your families .. without this amazing man I´m not sure I´d have my identity... he taught me compassion, respect, empathy, bed side manner, how to be humble and McDonalds isn´t bad for you. His guidance taught me more than all I learned in college or nursing school. His accolades and wisdom unmatched, as his dedication to his profession. Family though...that´s where he really shined...it didn´t take more than a "Hi daddy" or " Hi grandpa" to watch him beam with pride, a smile that spoke volumes. That silent grin you could see behind his camera, capturing every moment of their lives, in my opinion his greatest accomplishment ... I will always be grateful for the time I spent with him, and the decades of continued life lessons he´s still teaching. Big hugs to you all!
