Mrs. Ella, My Neighbor, My Friend, My Auntie, One of the Leaders of my village…I'm reminded of the West African Proverb, “It takes a whole village to raise a child”. Well, it is true and I am so thankful that God chose you to be that Auntie figure in my village, not only filling a void but, truly becoming a significant member of my family.
I am also thankful to God that I gave you your flowers while you could smell them and see them. And, on many occasions throughout my life and my career I had the opportunity to look you in your beautiful eyes and say thank you!! Thank you for the talks, the discipline, the ME time, shopping until we dropped and lunches wherever we ended up. God knew I needed an Auntie like you and although there were no blood ties, you 'always' treated me like a member of the family.
When my mother developed Alzheimer's you did not forget about her or me. Your door was open on Sundays for me and later for our son Jayvon too, because I just wanted to be in your warm home, with the aroma of beans and rice throughout the house, sharing memories or creating new ones. You told me whenever I wanted or needed to talk to my mother to come to your house because you would have a shoulder, an ear, tissue and a nice meal that only an Mrs. Ella could make. I know you are resting in Peace (perhaps sitting upright in the chair..LOL), and a strong Soprano in God's choir. Mrs. Ella Nora. I also know Mr. Price is happy to have your back with him. Please give Mr. Price a hug and kiss from me and tell him that I miss him and thank him for his love and laughs.
I am because …you were. And, I cannot thank you enough for all you have done for me since I was ten years old, growing up on Gilbert Avenue and Waverly Street.
To the children (Pumpkin & Peanut) and grandchildren (Candyce, Dannieka & Lindell) and all who will read this…pray and ask God to give you half the strength and ALL the faith Mrs. Ella Nora had…because of her faith she was a proud woman of God, who did not just exist but, a Christian woman who loved and lived to the fullest. She was rich in the Lord and everyone she met knew it.
Peace, Blessings and Love,
*Veronica Douglas-Givan*

All the words I can think of seem to be so inefficient in describing the relationship between me and my Granny Apple (LOL). I think about her all the time and miss her dearly. She played such a MAJOR role in my life many people thought she was my mother and not grandmother. She was one of my favorite people ever. I miss her random care packages in the mail, with dollar store toiletries, and chocolates. I miss her laugh and that strange look she gave when she tilted her glasses to see exactly who I was, even though she already knew(lol). I miss lunches at Burger King with the coupons she got in the mail. I miss watching her sit with the mother board at church in her elaborate all white dress suits, (as she got older she never could stay awake the whole service) (lol).
I'm so far away from home that sometimes it doesn't even feel like she's really gone. Almost as if that night that her and my mother dropped me off at the airport, she just went back home to Waverly street, and when I go home to visit that's where she'll be.
Well I just thank God that His peace is just as sufficient as His grace, because Lord knows I was ready to jump six feet deep for Granny A, but God truly did give me strength not to. I'm content with the time we did have and the fact that I was atleast able to say goodbye. She will always be in my heart.
