EVA BENDA Obituary

BENDA, EVA S. Eva S. Benda, widow of former Yale Professor Harry J. Benda, died on January 3, 2017 at the age of 92 in her home in Chevy Chase, Maryland. She had lived in North Haven from 1959 until 2010, when she moved to the Washington, D.C. area to be with her children and grandchildren. Predeceased by her husband (1971) and her son, Peter Martin (2012), Eva is survived by her daughter, Susan and Susan’s son, Elias Benda, and by Peter’s sons, Aaron and Jacob Benda. Eva was born in Berlin on May 13, 1924, grew up in Czechoslovakia, fled to New Zealand in 1950, where she met and married her husband, and came with him to the United States in 1952. After her husband’s death, Eva obtained a B.A and an M.A in psychology and worked for the State of Connecticut. Eva wrote eloquently of her experience as a Holocaust survivor in AND LIFE IS CHANGED FOREVER. She was smart and beautiful, had a generous soul and an indomitable spirit and was adored by her children and loved by her friends.

Thank you for remembering to contact me,especially with that portion of Eva's book. While we lived together she was taking writing classes at Albertus and I read many poems and essays she wrote. She was gifted writer. I, so pleased to have a lasting memory of her. Glad you spent so much time with her. She was so proud of you and Elias!

Eva and I were first colleagues and quickly became close intimate friends lasting almostI will miss having a friend 40 years. Although our professional lives divided our shared passion, we remained in touch as the bond was permanent. I will miss this friend with whom I could share most antything. I'm sure I'm not alone in my feelings and offer my deepest condolences to her family and friends.

One of my earliest memories is of Eva Benda - her amazing accent was so unusual to my 4 year old ears that she made quite an impression on me! Her singsong syntax was a delight to me throughout my life, as were her perspectives on herself and the world. She invited me to consider things far beyond myself, for which I am ever grateful. Susan and Elias, I send my love to you.
