Francis Ellis

1936 - 2017

Brother Francis Ellis, CSC, 80, passed away on Saturday, September 9, 2017 at Memorial Hospital, South Bend, IN. Born and raised in New Haven, CT, he came into contact there with the Brothers of Holy Cross at Notre Dame High School. He entered the Congregation of Holy Cross after high school and made his first profession of vows as a religious Brother on August 16, 1955. During his many years of active ministry, he served as a teacher and administrator at Holy Cross educational institutions in the Northeastern United States; Rome, Italy, and Fort Portal, Uganda. In his later years, he lived at the University of Notre Dame, where he served as a transportation coordinator for Brothers and as the Assistant Superior at Columba Hall. Brother Francis was known especially for his kind hospitality and his vital interest in the history of the Congregation of Holy Cross. On Friday, September 15, 2017, a Memorial Service will be held at 7:15 p.m. at the chapel of the St. Joseph Center, Valatie, New York. The Mass of Christian Burial will then be celebrated on Saturday, September 16, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. followed by interment at the St. Joseph Center cemetery.
