FRANK GRUSKAY Obituary

GRUSKAY, FRANK Frank Gruskay of Holmes Beach, Florida and Hamden, Connecticut, died on December 18, at the age of 87. The eldest son of Maurice and Rose Gruskay, he was born in Waterbury, Connecticut. He attended Wesleyan University where he excelled in academics and basketball, majoring in pre med studies. During this time, he met his wife of 61 years, Bette Gordon. He graduated from Yale University School of Medicine in 1954 and completed residency in pediatrics at Yale and Johns Hopkins University. After serving in the Army in Fort Meade, Maryland from 1957-1959, he moved with his family to New Haven where he entered private practice. In 1961, he co-founded the Milford Pediatric Group where he continued to work for 55 years. He was a brilliant pediatrician but it was his kind and gentle manner that drew thousands of patients to see him over the years. However, his greatest achievement and love was his family. He and Bette raised 3 children, Jeff, Susan and Nancy. Despite working many hours in the office and even doing house calls at night, he always made time for their games, swim meets, dance recitals and concerts, and was proud of their accomplishments. This pride was multiplied exponentially when it came to his grandchildren. He loved and knew each one of them, celebrating their unique gifts and pushing them to be their best. Just the mention of any of their names would result in a big smile on his face. He enjoyed sports of all kinds, including basketball, tennis and swimming. He loved to garden, play bridge, watch movies, read books, listen to opera, attend New Haven Symphony Orchestra concerts and watch UCONN Husky basketball. In his later years, Frank wintered in Florida where he enjoyed walks on the beach and watching sunsets. He loved to travel, especially to Italy. He will be deeply missed. He is survived by his son, Jeff and his daughter in law, Donna, his daughter, Nancy, and sons-in-law, Mark Gershman and Richard Warford, grandchildren, Matthew, Jordan, Lucas, Lindsay, Jesse and Sara Rose and his companion, Gilda Lender. He was predeceased by his wife, Bette and daughter, Susan Warford. Funeral Services at Robert E. Shure Funeral Home, 543 George St., New Haven, FRIDAY, December 23, at 11:00 a.m. with interment to follow at B’nai Jacob Memorial Park, 200 Wintergreen Ave, New Haven. A period of mourning will be observed at Whitney Center, 200 Leeder Hill Dr., Hamden, Apt. 2609 on Friday 3-7 p.m. and Saturday 12-4 p.m. Memorial Contributions may be sent to Dept. of Pediatrics, Yale University School of Medicine, Dr. Frank Gruskay Endowment Fund, P.O.Box 208064, New Haven, CT 06520-8064. He was one of our cousins on another continent, too far away to see enough of & when we did always a delight. Always part of happy memories. With love, Tony & Eve.

Although very untimely, I only recently found out about the passing of one of the greatest people I ever knew. Without him I would not be here. He was part of the biggest events involving myself and family - attending my wedding and then that of my oldest son some 26 years later - and I consider it a privilege to have been in his company. May God bless and keep you with him for eternity.

Jeff and Nancy, sorry to hear of your Dad's passing. Your family has had so many accomplishments that proud does not say enough. Aside from being a fabulous Physician he was a man that everyone admired. Becky and I always looked forward to seeing him at the social events that brought us together. He was always interested in what was happening in our lives, a true compassionate and loving man. Your family will always be part of what made Woodbridge Recreation the program that it is today. Thanks for the memories, they live on!22

Jeff and Nancy, sorry to hear about your dad. Your family has a history of amazing accomplishments. Your dad, aside from being a fantastic Physican, was someone we admired and respected. His ability to communicate was something Rebecca and I deeply appreciated. He always wanted to know what was happening in our lives and our conversations, although not as often as desired, was totally informative and interesting. The bond that existed between the Gruskay Family and Woodbridge Recreation can never be broken.

Jeff, Nancy & your families. So sad to hear about Frank's passing. We met rarely but when we did it always left us with smiles & great memories. Our last conversation was when he borrowed our house in Italy a couple of years ago. your Dad was one of those rare people who made everyone he came into contact feel good, he even had a smile in his voice. hopefully you can get a little comfort knowing he was so well liked & that you are in the thoughts of even such distant relatives.
With love

Frank was the most loving gentle, kind man. My kids Dana, Jeff, and Katie adored this wonderful man. As Did Bob and I. Frank would always come to the house to make sure the kids were okay when we were on vacation. Who else would do that.....only Frank.
Our family is so sad but so happy that Frank took care of us for so many years. We will always remember him with love.

Frank was one of my dearest friends for over 50 years. He and Bette welcomed Anita (of blessed memory) and my sons David and Josh to Woodbridge. He was the most amazing and dedicated doctor, and provided superb medical service (including house calls, even on Thanksgiving. He was my tennis partner and jogging partner, and after work, he'd often call me and say "I'll meet you at the top of the Hill" (at Milan Road and Northrup Road in Woodbridge), where we'd run for miles and talk about family, friends and our world. He was loved by so many, and will always be my beloved friend. Frank--you'll always be "at the top of the hill." May G-d forever bless your memory.
