Gerald Fishbone Obituary

Dr. Gerald Fishbone
Dr. Gerald Fishbone passed away peacefully on January 16th, alongside Marilyn, his beloved wife of 60 years. He was a week shy of his 89th birthday. His rich, full life was characterized by humility, gentleness and kindness and he touched countless lives through his mentorship and his guidance.
Dr. Fishbone was born in London, England and immigrated to the United States in 1958 after graduating from Medical School at the University of Sheffield, following in the footsteps of his older brother, Harold. He served as a Captain in the United States Air Force. He then trained as a radiologist at Yale New Haven Hospital and practiced radiology at the Hospital of St. Raphael (HSR) for over 40 years, caring for thousands, training hundreds and always making time to check on those who were ill. He was a beloved teacher and was named Teacher of the Year at HSR multiple times. His patience and empathy were matched by his tenacious commitment to curing Type One Diabetes, and he devoted over 40 years of volunteer leadership to JDRF, serving as Chairman of JDRF's International Board from 1983-1986 and for decades on JDRF International's Research Committee. He was also a member of Connecticut's Stem Cell Research Advisory Committee. Dr. Fishbone was also a committed volunteer in the Jewish Community and served as Chair of Holocaust Remembrance Day.
While he was amazingly accomplished, his ultimate legacy is that he was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend to many. He inspired everyone he touched with his wisdom, humility, grace, and dry sense of humor. Dr. Fishbone is survived by his wife Marilyn, his daughter Lisa and her husband Neil Wallack of Boston, MA, his son Scott and his wife Betsy (Floman) of North Caldwell, NJ, and his six grandchildren Harris, Perry, Sydney, Lucas, Alex and Kate.
The funeral will take place at Robert E. Shure Funeral Home, 543 George St., New Haven on Wednesday, January 18th at 11:00 a.m. with Interment Services to follow at the Mishkan Israel Cemetery, Jewell St., New Haven. A Period of Mourning will be observed on Wednesday and Thursday from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Fishbones' apartment at Whitney Center, South Entrance, 200 Leeder Hill Drive, Hamden, CT. Just by chance I happened upon Dr. Fishbone's obituary. Dr. Fishbone's quiet, humorous and brilliant teaching was much appreciated by me as a timid resident many years ago . During my 40 year career, his voice often echoed in my head as I pondered a difficult case. Even though I have not been in touch with Dr. Fishbone in many years, I am greatly saddened by his passing.

My deepest sympathy to Gerry's family. I knew him for many years as a colleague at HSR where he provided immeasurable assistance in the care of my patients. His knowledge base was astonishing, but his kindness and sweetness were incredible. I remember to this day how he greeted me the day I returned after my son's death. The deepness of his feeling for me brought me to tears. Thank you, Gerry for all you did for me.

My condolences to Marilyn and the Fishbone family. Dr Fishbone was a kind and gentle man who has contributed so much to medicine , and to research for juvenile diabetes.
It has been my great honor to know and work with Dr Fishbone.
May he rest in peace.

Our mother had the honor of being a patient of Dr. Fishbone & we probably hold the distinction of having the last "house call" ever made by Dr. Fishbone in this modern era. Even though it was the "final hurdle" in our mothers life, he saw to it that her comfort level was high & her pain level was non-existent. We will always be so grateful for every step he took in my mothers care. RIP doctor, your legacy can never be paralleled

I will miss Dr. Gerald Fishbone. Whenever I greeted him his response was always with a smile. I knew him best as an active participant in the Chair Aerobics Class where he sat in the center of the first row. I was impressed with the loving care he received. Dear Marilyn and family, may the wonderful memories of your beloved Jerry be of comfort to you during this difficult time.

I am so deeply saddened by the loss of Dr Gerald Fishbone. He was one of my favorite attendings, and, one of my favorite people during my radiology residency at St Raphael´s in the 1990´s. He was a brilliant radiologist and teacher, but also had a wonderful dry sense of humor that would make my day. My deepest condolences to the whole family.

Mrs. Fishbone, Lisa and Scott,
I am so very sorry to read of Mr. Fishbone's passing. He was such a nice man. I enjoyed conversing with him whenever I came to the house to care for the grounds. One of my favorite customers. He has left a great legacy. May he now rest in the peace of the Lord Almighty.
