Harold Levy Obituary

Dr. Harold D. Levy, M.D.
January 16, 2024
Harold D. Levy, M.D., age 90, passed away peacefully at home on Tuesday, January 16, 2024. He was born July 24, 1933, son of Dr. Nathan and Sadye (Brenner) Levy, in New Haven, CT and was a life-long resident of Branford, CT, a town he loved very much. He was predeceased by a sister, Elaine Lois Kaplan Gould and a grandson, Kevin Kirschner. He leaves behind his dear wife of 64 years, Patricia Ann Markle Levy, who was instrumental in helping the family prosper and flourish, four children, Ellen (Allan) Greenberg, Debra Kirschner, Andrew (Luisa Marciano) Levy and Betsy (Robert) Sachs, nine loving grandchildren; Seth (Nanda Eberhard), Allison, Eric, Alyssa, Emily, Serena, Melanie, Dylan, Reanna and numerous nieces and nephews.
Dr. Levy graduated from Yale University in 1955 and obtained his doctor of medicine degree from the Boston University School of Medicine in 1959. He did his medical internship and residency at the Rhode Island Hospital in Providence, Rhode Island.
He entered his father's general practice of family medicine and practiced for 59 years until his retirement in 2020. He was indebted to Sue Bauer and Susan Morgan, known as the "Levy Lifers," since they were both loyal members of the practice for over 50 years. Susan Morgan was Dr. Levy's medical secretary and the compass who helped guide the practice so smoothly.
When he came into practice in 1961, Dr. Levy was one of the first physicians in Branford and became known as "Branford's Doctor." He was on call 24/7 and often made house calls, whether it was the morning, the afternoon or the evening. He never relied on a covering physician, taking all the calls himself. Many of his patients were under his care for most of their lives and Dr. Levy considered them more as family than patients.
Dr. Levy was a member of Branford's first Board of Health and the Visiting Nurse Association of Branford. In his early practice, he was the physician for the Branford and North Branford Fire Departments.
He was a certified medical director of the Cove Manor Convalescent Hospital as well as the Branford Hills Health Care Center. He also was an attending physician at over 10 convalescent hospitals.
In addition, he was a 50-year member of the Connecticut Academy of Family Physicians as well as the American Academy of Family Physicians.
Dr. Levy was the Branford school physician and team physician for 20 years and attended all home and away games so that he could treat any injured players. He would also retreat to his office to set fractures or suture lacerations and thoroughly enjoyed being the team physician. In 1994, he was honored to be elected to the Branford Sports Hall of Fame. In addition, he was the physician for St. Mary School and St. Mary Church.
He was especially proud of his children and grandchildren and their endless accomplishments. He enjoyed attending their activities whether it be sports, shows or other special functions.
Dr. Levy was an avid fan of Yale football and rarely missed a home game during his 60 years as a season ticket holder at the Yale Bowl.
The family will gather at Congregation Beth El-Keser Israel, 85 Harrison Street (corner of Whalley Avenue) New Haven, CT on Sunday, January 21, 2024 at 12:00 p.m. with services to begin at 1:00 p.m. Streaming details to be announced. Burial to follow at the Congregation B'nai Jacob Memorial Park on Wintergreen Avenue, New Haven, CT. The family will be sitting shiva following the burial on Sunday at the home of Betsy and Robert Sachs at 39 Northford Road, Branford, CT with a minyan at 6:00 p.m., as well as Monday and Tuesday evenings with minyans at 7:00 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Branford Community Foundation in the name of Dr. Harold D. Levy, M.D., to establish a scholarship fund for Branford High School students. Mail to Branford Community Foundation, P.O. Box 462, Branford, CT 06405 or visit branfordcommunityfoundation.org

Our sincere sympathy to Patty, Andrew, Ellen, Debra , Betsy and their families,
I met Patty our first day of freshman year at Wheelock; therefore I met Harold while he was in Med. school and dating Patty. He was obsessed with washing his hands, ( a look into our future ?)
We lived in Boston, where we had great hospitals and doctors, yet if we had a decision to make about our medical health, we always consulted with our "medical guru" Harold Levy.
We will miss him greatly.

Who didn't love (Dr. Harold Levy)
OUR FAMOUS HANDSOME TOWN DOCTOR WHO STOOD OUT TO ALL IN THE COMMUNITY AMONGST BEING MY UNIQUE FRIEND
We called each other (characters) & I told him that he reminded me of Tommy Lee Jones in the Fugitive!
HIS LOOKS -HIS VOICE & more!
FOR Yes -HE WAS the Doctor of (investigations) because he would go far beyond to find ways to treat & cure one! - HE WAS SO BUSY THAT HE WOULD PACE FROM ROOM TO ROOM AS HE WAS ALWAYS MULTITASKING to GET THINGS DONE - THANK GOD HE HAD HIS ASSOCIATES SUE & SUE TO HELP HIM GET THINGS DONE!
AT MY APPOINTMENT HE WOULD SAY -WHY ARE YOU HERE TODAY DEBRA?
- I would reply - Have you been taking care of yourself?? Have you been walking? & at that~ he would be speechless! WE BOTH LAUGHED! Then he would say
Debra you don't look Good???
I would reply with > NO KIDDING -
DR LEVY!!! "Get with the Program"
WHICH was the name of the show I created as a Former YALE RADIO BROADCASTER & YOUTUBE SHOW -He was a fan & supported & listened to my show & we would talk about it - he would shake his head & say that's wonderful
As many know -We are very close in OUR last name - I'm a LEVI - HE IS LEVY - & many would confuse this fact because MY dad is (Harold LEVI) & he has a daughter named DEBRA -We would talk about this!! I used to kid with him -but ~I'm half Italian & half Jewish & I eat minestrone soup with mazsto balls! -HE LAUGHED SO HARD & Yes his patient gave him live entertainment!
The last time I saw Dr Levy was in the dollar store as we were both buying cards -He SAID -Debra Kay Levi!!! & We hugged -How is retirement? & we talked for quite a while - he could not believe what this world has come to -He talked about covid & he's never seen anything like it - He told me (that in one aspect) that he was happy to be retired due to what is happening with these VIRUSES & so forth- Our very last conversation was not too long ago as I CALLED HAROLD to tell him that I met his lovely Grandaughter Serena in PT! REALLY? FOR he was so excited & proud of her!!
Truly, I am so saddened of HIS sudden passing!

January 18, 2024

Doc Levy was a great man, brilliant as a practioner, and a patients doctor always, salt of the earth & "the greatest generation" ever! I had a special relationship with Doc over the years as we enjoyed each others company at many sports games where his grandchildren participated. He was so proud of each one of them as scholar athletes and was thrilled when his grandaughter won the girls field hockey state championship in 2022! I sat with him just two years ago at the Yale-Harvard game and at the Sachs tailgate party afterward. It was special day and a moment in time for where Doc let me know how special my parents were. His daughters are special along with Andrew and the love of his life Mrs. Levy who he adored and the entire Levy, Sachs, & Greenberg families. His legacy will live on forever through his 9 beautiful grandchildren.

Dear Levy family, How is it possible that this great man has left us? As a nurse I worked with him over 50 years. As myself, husband and extended family as patients we were always treated with expertise and respect. When my dad suffered a stroke, he cared for him at all hours. He even ran out to my parked car to give him a flu shot so he didn´t have to come into the office. We are on vacation now so we can´t make the services. There will NEVER be another doctor/human being to grace this earth. We will miss him forever. Alphonse and Joanna Panzo

Dr. Levy was my doctor from 1964 to 2020. He was THE greatest doctor and a trusted friend. He was always there for me as well as my family no matter what. I always say that they just don´t make doctors like Dr. Levy any more. His manner, keen medical expertise, dedication and practice was one for the record books. It´s a sad day but also a day of many going forward filled with many, many great memories. God speed, my friend.

I was so very saddened to read this news today. As someone who grew up in Branford, I was very fortunate to have had Dr. Levy as my doctor for the first half of my life. He was always warm, friendly, compassionate, and always took the time to ask about my family and what was going on in my life during each visit. He was the best at what he did and was truly one of a kind. Rest in peace, Dr. Levy.

We were beyond saddened to learn of Dr. Levy´s passing yesterday. He was our family doctor for many years and he went to high school with our dad. They were the best of friends forever. We´ll never forget him sitting at our dad´s funeral crying in the pew at church. He was the epitome of what a doctor should be. There are none today that have matched his professionalism or dedication. He made numerous house calls for both mom and dad in their later years when they were sick and unable to get to the office. He would always call us back whenever we had a question about either one of them and what we should do. We have a beautiful picture of Dr. Levy on the BHS football field with our dad (Joe Farina) who was coaching back in the 70´s. May he now rest in eternal peace. We will miss you always and are grateful for all you did for us.

Dr.Levy was my family doctor all my life until his retirement. He literally saved my life in his office when I was a little girl. He was more like family to me, my parents, Andrew and Lee Amarante, my husband Walt and my sons Kevin and Ryan.. He was kind, caring, thoughtful, intelligent, sweet and the best physician I´ve ever known. My heart is broken, I felt he was immortal and that he just might live on this earth forever. I´m sure he did not need to walk the stairway to Heaven, he already had his wings! He called me in 2020 to personally tell me he was retiring. I told him how I felt about him and for that I am grateful. But today I´m so sad...my deepest sympathies to his family, friends and patients. There will never be another Harold Levy. The world was a better place with him in it! God bless...Lucy Amarante Krauchick

We moved to Branford the same year Dr. Levy began his practice. We made several moves over the years, but always continued being his patients. How many funerals did we attend where he would be quietly sitting in Church. How many office visits where we would be sitting facing his desk, with the never ending array of pictures of his dear family. How many smiles with "The Sues". Before we made our last move and we stopped in to say Goodbye, the three of us were hugging and crying together-49 years of devotion. God bless you, dear Dr. Levy.

Harold Levy was the consummate doctor - no one more caring and no one more available for his innumerable patients.
He set a standard of care that can only be "aspirational" - ie, so extraordinary that it cannot really be equaled, only sought after - for those of us who share the same profession.
He will be dearly missed, never forgotten.
