Harry Hammond Jr.

HAMMOND, HARRY S., JR. Harry S. Hammond, Jr., 94, of Barboursville, VA and formerly of Branford, CT died on August 19, 2012. Born in Pittsburgh, PA, February 27, 1918, the eldest son of Harry and Helen Hammond, he grew up in Garden City, Long Island, NY. He was a graduate of the Fessenden School '33 in Newton, MA and the Hotchkiss School '37 in Lakeville, CT. He went on to graduate from Harvard College in 1941 and received his M.A. in American History from Columbia University in 1950. During WWII, he served as a LT JG in the Navy in the Pacific. He was president of the Channel Bookshop in New Haven, CT for eighteen years and a member of the New Haven Rotary Club (Paul Harris Fellow). He was a longtime member of the Harvard Club of New York and a life member of the New England Society. Locally, he was a member of the Albemarle Rotary Club, and the Charlottesville English Speaking Union. His volunteer activities included the New Haven Colony Historical Society, S.C.O.R.E. and Trinity Presbyterian Church in Charlottesville, VA. He is pre-deceased by his beloved wife of 51 years, Constance J. Hammond; a brother Frank H. Hammond; and a sister, Anne H. Graves; and leaves four daughters, Grace Boss of Hill, NH, Barbara Schoenly of Salisbury, CT, Jane McKinney of Barboursville, VA and Helen Hammond of Charlottesville, VA and four grandchildren. A memorial service will be held on September 8, 2012 at 3:00 pm at Trinity Presbyterian Church, 3101 Fontaine Avenue Extended in Charlottesville, VA.
