Isaac Goodrich Obituary

Dr. Isaac Goodrich
Dr. Isaac Goodrich, 85, of Oxford, died Monday, September 30, 2024 at St. Mary's Hospital in Waterbury, Connecticut after suffering a brief illness.
Born on September 19, 1939 at Milledgeville, Georgia to Ellis and Freida Goodrich, Ike was a graduate of Georgia Military Academy with honors and continued his commitment to his studies at University of Georgia. He attributed his disciplined approach to these early life experiences. Graduating from the Medical College of Georgia after only three years, he completed his surgical internship at Columbia Presbyterian, where he met the love of his life in 1964. Isaac married Dianne L. Brittain on August 28, 1965 at the Pauline A. Hartford Memorial Chapel at Columbian Presbyterian Hospital in New York City. The next day he reported for duty to Fort Riley in Manhattan, Kansas, and was deployed to Vietnam three weeks later as Battalion Surgeon, where he completed two tours of service and was awarded the Bronze Star.
Upon his return to the states in 1966, Isaac started his four-year neurosurgical residency at Yale New Haven Hospital. Dianne and Ike settled in West Haven and started their family. Following the arrival of Mindy Anne, then Scott David, the family moved to Woodbridge. Ike went into private practice with Neurosurgical Associates. He served as President of the City Medical Society, the State Medical Society, and an Alternate to the American Medical Association.
Ike was a faithful member of the B'nai Jacob Congregation in Woodbridge, and attended Minyon regularly.
Survivors include his wife Dianne of Oxford, three children Mindy (George) Welker of Bethany, Scott (Lisa) Goodrich of Cheshire, and Dr. Jennifer Goodrich (Justin Eisenberg) of Michigan; five grandchildren, Anjolina, Alexandra, Zachary, Zoe, and Elijah; one brother, Dr. J. Allan Goodrich (Martha) of Martinez, Georgia; a sister-in-law, Ellen Goodrich, and many beloved Goodrich cousins, nieces, and nephews.
Fiercely dedicated to his profession, his family, and his faith, Dr. Isaac Goodrich will be missed by colleagues, neighbors, co-workers, and former patients, each of whom consider him "one of the last greats". His bedside manner was filled with compassion and kindness, warmth and humanity, understanding and a great love that went well beyond traditional medicine. He was a pioneer in the new frontier of neurosurgery, and his legacy will live on in those professionals he influenced and mentored.
Graveside services will be held at B'nai Jacob memorial Park, 200 Wintergreen Ave., New Haven Wednesday, October 2nd at 11 a.m. Memorial Contributions may be sent to Congregation B'nai Jacob, 75 Rimmon Rd., Woodbridge, CT 06525 or to the charity of your choice. Shiva will be at 84 Links Way, Oxford on Wednesday, October 2 or Thursday, October 3 from 6 p.m. – 8 p.m.

The best husband, father, son and brother there ever was, He was a caring physician who was brilliant but humble. Accomplished leader in the field of neurosurgery. He served his country, community and and family without the need of accolades which he deserved. He will always be missed but not forgotten. RIP brother

My husband and I knew Ike socially because of the marriage between his daughter, Jennifer and our son, Justin. Always a gentleman, kind and courteous. Loved his family beyond words. He has touched so many lives, personally and professionally and we were honored to have had the pleasure of him in our lives. Our deepest sympathies to Diane and family. RIP dear Ike!

Ike the kindest surgeon you could meet. I was years his junior when I decided to start my own practice in 1977. He was kind to me along with Frank Robinson and Lycurgus Davey we would have long conversations about patients and their care. They helped me start my practice and our collegial relationships lasted until , alas, their retirement and beyond.
Ike treated everyone equally and operated only when he was convinced that he could help the patient.
He followed the oath of Maimonides:
In the sufferer let me see only the human being".
His slightly crooked smile is carved in my memory.
My sympathies to Diane and the whole family.

A wonderful doctor his pts always came first. If his pts lab work wasn´t taped to the front of the chart by 4 AM - God help you !! He was Not Happy.
He had so much compassion for his pts and always happy to teach ! Loved him. You always knew where you stood with him. He meticulously spelled all his orders out so there were no questions about what he wanted for his pts. I wished all the doctors could have been that precise . My thoughts & prayers are with him & his family. RIP Terri

I am deeply sorry for the loss of Dr Isaac Goodrich, who was my great mentor and dear colleague during my career. He was an exemplary physician of highest integrity and ethics. When I immigrated to this country from Germany and started my career at St. Raphael Hospital, Dr Goodrich quickly integrated me into the community, for which I was extremely grateful. It started a long lasting 30 year very close cooperation, from which I benefitted enormously. He was an extremely good teacher and shared his knowledge freely. He consulted on almost every patient with his neuroradiological colleagues, looked at every perspective of a patient’s case with us before making a therapy plan. He was a most conscientious physician. His prime goal was patient care. Patients trusted and loved him for his compassion and skill.
Dr. Goodrich always encouraged us to get new technologies and supported it fully. The hospital and his colleagues benefited tremendously from his vision, knowledge and perseverance. He was a wonderful colleague. His contribution to the Neurosciences at St. Raphael were immense and he earned the department widespread recognition and respect. We all and especially me owe him tremendously and I will thank him and keep him in my memory forever.
Losing a husband, father and beloved colleague is difficult. Reliving the memories is consoling. The theologian Bonhoeffer once remarked: The person you loved will be everywhere and every time you think of him. With time the good memories of the past will turn the pain to joy and a treasure you carry with you, whenever you think of him.
My deep-felt condolences

To the Goodrich family

I met Dr Goodrich when I was a young girl. I had a bicycle accident which he couldn´t believe because of my injuries but we had a nurse that was a witness. We requested dr Goodrich and thankfully he was in the emergency room. He took great care of me. To make a long story short, I went to him over the years for my family. He was the best really. I know he will be sorely missed by his family and also all the patients he treated over the years. I send my deepest sympathy

My Dad was incredibly blessed to have Dr. Goodrich as his doctor. Despite not being able to change our ultimate outcome, his compassion, beside manner and understanding that he provided to our family is still talked about 25 years later. He was truly one of a kind and will be gravely missed.

I will miss Ike Goodrich MD. He was a favorite teacher of neurosurgical residents at Yale and surgical residents at St Raphael. He always made himself available to help with difficult cases, including an aneurysm clipping on a colleague on the morning of Yom Kippur, when he knew he was also needed elsewhere. He was a mentor, a partner, and a friend. Andrea and I express our sincere condolences to Dianne and the family.

I was a surgical resident at SMH, and had the honor and privilege to have know Dr. Goodrich. He was a consumate surgeon and always so professional. I remeber calling him about a patient in the middle of the night. He came to the hospital in the wee hours of that morning, dressed in a suit. He was always so kind to the patients, their families and to hospital staff.

No words can ever say enough about Dr. Goodrich. Our family adored him. I personally had the honor of working with him in ICU and then in the OR. He was a most skilled surgeon and compassionate advocate for his patients. We then were blessed to have him as the physician who saved the life of our 14-year-old daughter. Years later, he danced with her at her wedding and she is now 50 years old. They remained in contact all these years. We are forever indebted to him. Our deepest sympathy, love, thoughts and prayers are with his family. Rest in peace Dr. Goodrich. You will be missed by all who knew and loved you. God bless you and your family.

We are shocked to hear of Ike´s passing tonight as I spoke to him just a week ago and we planned to get together in the near future. He sounded so good. My wife and I are at a medical convention when our son called to let us know the sad news. Ike will be missed as a good friend since 1972. He was a respected, skillful neurosurgeon, a great diagnostician. He rendered compassionate care to his patients and their families. We collaborated on many cases. Ike was an easy person to work with and be with. Since Dianne, my wife Linda and I have the same birthday, we celebrated together. So many good memories. Our heartfelt condolences to Dianne, Mindy, Scott and Jennifer and their families.

In 1972, Dr. Goodrich operated on my back. He told me then, that my landscaping days were over. I laughed. I said to him, how do you stop something that you love to do. Fifty plus years later, I continue on with what I love to do. He was great and fummy at times.

Dear Goodrich Family, It was so sad to read of Ike´s passing. I had the pleasure of knowing him as a dental hygienist. He was truly a wonderful southern gentleman not to mention a very fine doctor. And so down to earth a man of his esteem. Sooo sorry for your loss. Hold each other tight. With sadness, Gerri Giering
