September 23, 1944 - February 1, 2025
Jane Backman Fox, 80, of Niantic, CT, and a longtime resident of Guilford, CT, passed away peacefully on February 1, 2025, holding hands with her beloved husband and surrounded by her sons and loved ones. Jane was born on September 23, 1944, in New Haven, CT to Walter and Frances Backman. She grew up in East Haven, CT and attended East Haven High School. Jane graduated from The University of Connecticut and was a member of the Kappa Alpha Theta national sorority.
Jane was a lifetime member of the Guilford Conservation Trust and active in the Guilford Jaycees, as well the Giants Neck Beach Association. She volunteered at Lawrence and Memorial Hospital in the Read to Grow program and was a member of the Lawrence and Memorial Benefactors Society (LAMBS). Jane also volunteered at the Lyme Consolidated School. Throughout her life, she enjoyed playing tennis, swimming, and golfing. Over the past 30 years, her favorite pastime was sitting on the beach, enjoying her ocean view with friends and family.
Jane is survived by her high school sweetheart and husband of 60 years, Thomas Fox and her two sons, Peter Fox (Jennifer) of North Haven, CT and Steven Fox (Jessica) of East Greenwich, RI. She was a loving grandmother to Benjamin Fox, Ella Fox, and Lily Fox. She is also survived by her sister, Joan Ayr, of North Branford, CT, as well as many cherished friends and extended family. She was preceded in death by her brother, John Backman of South Portland, Maine.
Jane's family is eternally grateful for the doctors and nurses at Lawrence and Memorial Hospital for their care and compassion in her final days and for the caregivers from Elder Crew who cared for Jane and Tom over the past several months.
Family and friends are invited to attend A Celebration of Life on Saturday, May 3rd, at 12:00 PM, at the Giants Neck Beach Association Clubhouse, located at 31 West Pattagansett Road, Niantic, CT. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Guilford Land Conservation Trust or the East Lyme Aquatics Center in Jane's memory.

Jane and Tom Fox were friends and neighbors for many years in Sunrise in Guilford. Many good times together. Our children grew up together and shared many memories. I know they were under care for sometime together but I´m so happy they passed together. My condolences go out to Steven and Peter.

Jane was one of my first volunteers with the Books for Babies Program at L&M. Her smile ,warmth and gentle manner made her very popular with the families she visited on the maternity. Blessings to you her family on both Jane and Tom´s passing. Please accept my sincere condolences.

When I was a young girl, I thought of Aunt Jane as my "cool aunt" - she wore mini skirts, had a princess phone, and studied phys ed in college, which felt very exotic to me. She had a pool and a cool little car (well, I think that was Uncle Tom´s actually, but he and Aunt Jane were a packaged deal so it still counts). As I got older, I perhaps stopped thinking of her as "cool," but I always thought she was great. She was a great conversationalist, a great host (her beach parties are forever memories for us) and a great friend to my mom. She will be missed.
