Jane Marshall Obituary

Jane Wylie Marshall
February 6, 2025
Jane Wylie Marshall of New York City, Guilford, and North Branford, Connecticut died peacefully at home on February 6th, 2025.
Jane, who was 95 at the time of her passing, was married to Joseph R. Marshall for 67 years, and he predeceased her in 2018. Jane is survived by her treasured daughters, Amanda, Erika, Abigail and Wylie, adored sons-in-law Christopher Zingg, Landis Zimmerman and Javier Carrión, and six cherished grandchildren, Marshall and Emma Zingg, Grace and Charlotte Zimmerman, and Nicolas and Carlos Carrión, and a beloved extended family. Jane's brother, Robert S. Wylie, Jr., predeceased her in January, 2025. Jane graduated from the Brearley School in New York City, attended Connecticut College, New London, Connecticut and graduated from the University of Denver, Colorado.
While raising four children on the Upper West Side, Jane was active in New York City politics, and was a founding member of the Riverside Democrats and worked as a District Captain to elect William F. Ryan to Congress. In 1969 Jane started working at the Brearley School, eventually moving into the Admissions Department from 1972 to 1984, retiring as Director of Admissions. Jane and Joe moved to Guilford, Connecticut in 1993, where they became active in Guilford community organizations. Jane was a member of the Board at The Guilford VNA, Guilford A Better Chance, The Hyland House Museum, The Guilford Library Association and the Friends of the Guilford Library. She was also a founding member of the Secret Gardens of Guilford Tour, a volunteer at the Hole in the Wall and for many years a co-chair of the Friends of the Guilford Library Book Sale, where she volunteered for over 27 years. Jane was also an enthusiastic gardener and cook, and she loved to entertain, to walk and to read. Jane will be remembered by her family and her friends for her humor, her intellect and her humanity. She cared deeply for people, and she never faltered in her vision that we all have an obligation to work towards a more equitable tomorrow. She never shied away from putting her words, actions, and resources towards that end.
A memorial service will be held at the First Congregational Church, 122 Broad Street, Guilford, CT, on Saturday, April 26, 2025 at 1:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, a contribution in memory of Jane may be made to the Friends of the Library, Guilford Free Library, 67 Park Street, Guilford CT 06437; https://guilfordfreelibrary.org/ Arrangements in care of the Guilford Funeral Home, 115 Church St., Guilford.
