I remember Joel as our camp Alton doctor of many seasons up on Lake Winnepasuakee in NH. He was a really great guy and I was sorry to hear that he had left us too soon. He touched many lives for the better both at camp and in the "real world" as we called the "non-camp" world. I am proud to have known him.

I am eternally grateful to Dr Rappeport for saving my 16 year old son, Luis, many years ago. He gave us Support during my son’s transplant and helped us to go through that very dificult time. He was a great human person and very dedicated to his patients. We always remember him with love.

Steven and Amy,
I dreamt about your dad the other day and decided to look him up online. I discovered that he had passed away in January. I worked many years beside him at the Brigham and missed his brilliance as a physician and humor and compassion as a human being after I left the Brigham to raise my sons. There will always
be a place in my heart for your dad. He touched so many people's lives.

To Joel's children
I just was saddened by the lose of your father. Joel saved my life back in 1976. His care and support was fantastic. If it was not for Joel I would not have been married, had children and grandchildren to share my life with. I am forever grateful for your father.

To Joel´s children,

I would like to express to you with these simple words how sad I feel since I heard about the loss of your father. Joel saved my life in 1983 and his care and support before, during and after my bone marrow transplant has been invaluable. By saving me he also made it possible for my children to come to this world. He was a loving man with a fantastic sense of humor; he made made me laugh and smile during the most difficult moments I went through... I will never forget him, he will always be in a very spacial place in my heart. And even though it is sad to realize that I will never see him in this world again, thinking of him will always encourage me to smile and be forever thankful for the life he gave me back.

To Joel's loving children---I am so sorry that I didn't hear of your Dad's passing until today. I worked so closely with him when I was Exec. Director and he was a volunteer of the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. I always knew that when I heard laughter coming from an exam room at Yale that he was nearby!

JR, our pet name for your Dad, didn't just care for his patients with medicine but with humor, dedication, and love. He will be in my thoughts and prayers always.

I am saddened by the news that we lost a giant in the field of hematopoietic stem cell transplantation. Joel was a hero to many, a role model to me, and a major driver in my decision to work in this field. He will be missed.

I lived next door to the Rappaports in Quincy and they were a wonderful family. One of my earliest "jobs" was as babysitter to Joel and Muriel. I have thought of them so often and wish I knew he was in Wolfeboro as I, too, lived in that town. Ann Young Hatton

To Steve and Amy,

We are sorry to hear of the loss of your father. Joel and I spend many an hour talking about all sorts of things at the "shop" at Camp Alton after his Dr. duties at camp.

With some trepidation I remember his driving me to the Laconia General Hospital to have my broken ankle put back together after wrestling night. I had to tell him of the short cuts to Laconia even while I was in a lot of pain and smoking a cigar.

My condolences to Joel's children. Although I didn't get to know the kids, I had many chats with Joel
over the years. He was a wonderful and caring person and was always very nice to me. I also kept him apprised of events at washington university medical school when he needed information . may you find comfort among your friends and family. Marcia Burstein Weiss, Nelson's sister

Joel saved the life of our now 40 year old son in 1990 with a bone marrow transplant. His devotion to patients was extraordinary. We will forever be grateful for his life as a physician.

Joel's compassion for his patients was matched only by his dedication to them. His warmth and humor were ever present. He started as my physician, but quickly became my friend. He will be greatly missed, and always remembered with gratitude and warmth.
Rest well, my friend.

May your hearts soon be filled with wonderful memories of joyful times together as you celebrate a life well lived.

Joel was a great physician and teacher, a first-rate academic, but here i praise his resilience and his endurance, despite the wrenching disabilities of his last years. Joel was tough, taking whatever came. His time as a patient was as memorable as his years as a caring physician. Howard Spiro.

I worked in the office of Dr. Ralph Horwitz. who at the time was Chairman of Internal Medicine at Yale New Haven Hospital.
Dr. Rappeport was always a gentleman to the clerical staff when he came into the office. He will be sadly missed!! Cheryl Horner
