John Monahan Obituary

John P. Monahan
John P. Monahan, ("Moe"), 90, of Hamden died peacefully at home on November 23, 2024. John was born in New Haven in 1934 to the late Patrick Monahan and Alice McGovern Monahan. He was married to the love of his life, Lucille Monahan, for 67 years. John and Lucille's lifelong bond is a genuine old-fashioned love story.
John was the proud and loving father of Patrick J. Monahan II (and daughter-in-law, Kathy D. Monahan), Ann Diana (and son-in law, Dr. Rich Diana), and Kathy Monahan (and son-in-law, John Baglivo). He loved spending countless hours with his five beloved grandchildren, Katie Monahan (and her wife, Rachel Levi), Gregory Monahan (and his wife, Grace Heisenbottle), Jack Diana, Megan Diana, and Gianni Baglivo, and he adored his great grandson, Luca Levi Monahan. John is also survived by his loving sister, Mary Monahan Miller (and brother-in-law, Kevin Miller) and brothers-in-law Jack Roach and Ed Bacchiocchi. He was predeceased by his sister, Alice Monahan Roach, sister-in-law Rachel Bacchiocchi, and brother-in-law, Jack Franco. He was also blessed by the love of his many nieces and nephews. He and his numerous cousins, many of whom grew up together in old Fair Haven, remained as close as can be, gifted with the love of friendship as well as family.
John graduated from Saint Francis grammar school and Saint Mary's High School, and soon after began a lifelong career with the United Illuminating Company. As a young man in his twenties, he spent seven years in the Army National Guard. While working for the United Illuminating Company, he advanced over the years to become a director in the purchasing and stores department. He treated his UI co-workers as a second family, and after his retirement, he often raved about "all his fantastic years in the company" with such wonderful colleagues.
John was all about family, pouring himself into the activities of his children and grandchildren. As a coach or spectator, he attended virtually every school or sporting event in which his children were involved, and then he repeated that loving practice for each of his grandchildren, even making his way out to Chicago just to see his grandson, Gianni, play in his youth hockey games.
John was a humble man of prayer and faith. He quietly devoted countless hours over the years volunteering his time and service to charitable causes and simple acts of kindness. Whether volunteering for church or school activities, aiding the ambitious athletes in the Special Olympics, volunteering as a driver for the local program in which he drove so many cancer patients who had no available transportation to their doctors and treatment facilities, John always found it natural to live each day with a kind and giving spirit.
Our family offers special thanks to the wonderful caregivers, the Atrinity Home Health team, and the nurses, doctors and other healthcare providers who helped him remain comfortable at home these last several months, which was his wish.
Visiting hours will be from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. on Friday, November 29, 2024, in the Iovanne Funeral Home, Inc. 11 Wooster Place, New Haven. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in St. Paul VI Parish at St. Rita Church, 1620 Whitney Avenue, Hamden at noon. The burial will follow at All Saints Cemetery in North Haven. Our family respectfully asks that any memorial contributions be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, www.stjude.org to which John and Lucille have always committed their support.
