Lloyd Buzzell Obituary

Lloyd J. Buzzell
Lloyd J. Buzzell died August 30, 2023, of congestive heart failure. A longtime resident of New Haven, CT, he moved to Branford, CT, in 2012. He is survived by his beloved wife of 51 years, Judith (Brachman); his wonderful son, Joshua; Joshua's delightful wife, Emma Barnett; and his adorable grandson, Ben, all of Seattle, WA. He was predeceased by a steadfast brother, Guy, of Providence, RI.
Born October 16, 1946, he was a graduate of Kent School, where he was captain of the football team, and Wesleyan University, where he was captain of the crew. He held graduate degrees from Yale Divinity School and Southern Connecticut State University.
He had three distinct careers: working in higher education, mostly in financial aid at Yale College; counseling people in financial distress; and teaching inmates at Manson Youth Institute.
He rowed competitively for 50 years, starting at age 13, at Kent and ending on his 63rd birthday at the Head of the Charles Regatta. A voracious reader, he enjoyed traveling, art museums, the theater and following Yale football. One of the first recipients of Wesleyan's alumni service award in 1988, he was secretary of his class for over 40 years. Starting in 1991, he regularly contributed opinion pieces on a range of topics to this and other CT papers. After he moved to Branford, he enjoyed moderating a weekly discussion group at the senior center.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Vermont Campership Fund at vtcampership.org . Please specify Camp Sangamon.

Judy, I don´t know if you´ll this, but I want to convey sincere condolences to you and your family. I did not do a good job keeping up with Lloyd after YDS. When we did talk it was always comforting and something to laugh about. You and your teaching seemed to provide a steading anchor for him. I remember Lloyd as a friend, welcoming, intellectually curious, and grounded in a commitment of service. I´m glad he found professional and community outlets for his values. I admired him and considered him to be a fellow traveler (though I flatter myself to be in his league), who found his calling as a layman.

Lloyd was in my class at Wesleyan and I loved the columns he wrote as our secretary. Generous, kind, always interesting. I miss him. David Garrison

Judy, I'm cleaning out old emails today, and I came across a message Lloyd sent in June. He announced the birth of your grandchild and shared his diagnosis of congestive heart failure. I see from this post that Lloyd died in August. I'm so sorry. I have the loveliest memories of you, Josh, and Lloyd from our time as neighbors on Norton Parkway. Your collective humor, warmth, and kindness eased my way into the early years of parenthood. Sending you love and wanting to know how and where you are.

I was in Lloyd's class at Wesleyan but we barely knew each other. Then, every few months, I would read his column about the comings and goings of the Class of 1968 in Wesleyan Magazine. His warmth and humor and generosity glowed as he kept up with me and his other classmates. I came to know and love him. I will miss him, always.

Judy, Just want to let you know that I am thinking about you and Lloyd, and experiencing both the sadness of his passing, and the joy that he brought to the lives of so many of us who knew him, and know you. I know that the last few years have been so difficult for you both, with the medical problems that presented themselves. And I also know how amazingly well you both dealt with the pain and the concerns as they progressed. You and Lloyd are very special people. With affection, sadness, and appreciation for having both you and Lloyd in my life. Bob Reisfeld

My heartfelt condolences to the Buzzell family on the passing of Lloyd.
During my first couple of years at Sacred Heart University, Lloyd supervised the Public Relations Dept. He gave me the opportunity to grow and put me in charge of the alumni newsletter. (Much later, I became founding editor of Sacred Heart Magazine.)
Lloyd was a gentleman, a good guy. RIP, sir.
