Marcia Lebowitz Obituary

Marcia (Lipman) Lebowitz
Marcia (Lipman) Lebowitz, 81, of 22 Stonegate Circle, Cheshire, devoted wife of 48 years to the late Dr. Paul Lebowitz, passed away peacefully at Waterbury Hospital on September 22, 2021. Born in Cambridge, MA, November 14, 1939, Marcia was the daughter of the late Jacob and Frieda (Frye) Lipman. Beloved Mother of Arthur Lebowitz (Claudette) and Charles Lebowitz, both of Cheshire. Sister of the late Ira Lipman (Ann Ruth). Grandmother of Mazie and Jacob Lebowitz.
Marcia received her MSW from the Simmons College School of Social Work in Boston, and met Paul at Boston City Hospital. After getting married in 1965, they lived briefly in Rockville, MD, Branford, CT, then moved to Woodbridge, CT where they raised their two children.
One of her proudest achievements was establishing the Children's Divorce Center in 1979, a unique practice to counsel children and parents around divorce related issues. She later wrote the book "I Think Divorce Stinks", lectured, ran conferences, and became an adjunct professor at Quinnipiac University Law School to help educate the legal community and encourage more importance be put on a child's perspective during divorce.
Marcia spent many summers at her vacation home on Martha's Vineyard with her family. She loved sitting on the porch reading and swimming at the end of the day. She enjoyed theatre, movies, books, intellectual discussions, the Boston Red Sox, crossword puzzles, and scrabble. She was an avid Bridge player and loved spending time with her close friends.
Funeral Services will be held at the Temple Beth David section of Cheshire Hillside Cemetery, 166 Wallingford Road, Cheshire, on SUNDAY morning, September 26th at 11:00 AM. Memorial Contributions may be sent to the Family Law Program at Quinnipiac University Law School at www.qu.edu/givelaw or send to Office of Development and Alumni Affairs, 275 Mount Carmel Avenue, Hamden, CT 06518. Marcia was a wonderful counselor for my two sons as my family went through a divorce. Marcia and I went on to work on her book 'I Think Divorce Stinks'. The goal was to provide pictures for the children to color and talk about h/h feelings. When we last talked she was excited talking to future lawyers to give them a better picture of what children experience during the trauma of divorce. To give them the other side of divorce, the most important side of divorce. She was all about children.

I am so sorry and sad to hear of the loss of this caring woman. Marcia was a wonderful refuge to me as a child. I loved her office in Woodbridge. I felt safe and eager to share and talk with her while I drew pictures that helped process my parent´s divorce. She will be missed greatly.

I always enjoyed seeing Mrs. Lebowitz when she visited our store. Such a kind, lovely lady. May she rest in peace.

Dear Family, I was so saddened to read of Marcia´s passing. She was such a lovely person. After reading the obituary of all her wonderful accomplishments I realized how modest she was. She spoke mostly of her love of family and all the great memories shared especially on beloved Martha´s Vineyard. I knew she was especially proud of helping children of divorce but never boasted of how special that program was. That was Marcia, so modest. As her dental hygienist for many years she was one of my favorite patients, always fascinating and kind. Even after I retired she willingly walked me through a private health problem for which I am eternally grateful. May you Rest In Peace Marcia. You have left a giant footprint with those petite feet! Bless your loving family! Sincerely Gerri Giering

The world is never going to be the same without this incredible advocate for children. While some of us will carry on and spread her message and legacy, we are only poor substitutes. I am so grateful she came to Quinnipiac Law and offered to teach! I will miss our long conversations and collaborations. I will miss her friendship. I am a better person (and lawyer) for knowing her. May her memory be a blessing. Sending much love to the Lebowitz family.
