Mark Maturo Obituary

Mark S. Maturo
August 5, 1951 - June 28, 2025
Mark S. Maturo, 73, of New Haven beloved husband of Charlene Mazzucco Maturo, passed away on June 28, 2025, surrounded by his family at MidState Medical Center. Loving father of Mark (Megan) Maturo of Orange and Christine (Christopher) Breen of Weymouth, MA. Grandfather of Noelle "Punkie-poo" and James "Giacomo" Breen and Ellie "Ellie-Lou" Maturo. They were the light of his life. Brother of Cheryl Maturo Morgan of East Haven, Joel (Michele) Maturo of NC and the late Philip G. Maturo. Brother-in-law of Patricia Mazzucco of East Haven. He leaves many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Mark was born in New Haven on August 5, 1951, son of the late Philip (Phil) and Doris Juliano Maturo. After working as a manufacturing supervisor at HB Ives and baking overnights at Apicella's Bakery, Mark became the proud owner of Rae's Driving School in East Haven and Madison. For over 35 years, his gentle instruction helped countless students gain independence by earning their licenses. Mark also acted as de facto mentor to students who turned to him for personal guidance. Mark was a devoted family man who cherished the holidays and large family gatherings, where stories were shared and memories were made. He enjoyed traveling, especially cruises and tropical getaways, and making the occasional "donation" at the casino. His favorite destination was Cape May, where he and Charlene spent countless Indian summers together over the past two decades. Mark enjoyed many trips to Yankee Stadium with his family, playing the Beatles "Rubber Soul" and The Rolling Stones "Flashpoint" on full blast in his car, and watching Star Trek TNG. Mark was also famous for his stuffed pepper breads and pasta e fagioli. Mark will be remembered for his patience, steady presence, and quiet wisdom - qualities that will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and the many students whose lives he touched.
His funeral procession will leave the PORTO FUNERAL HOME, 234 Foxon Rd. (Rte. 80), East Haven THURSDAY morning at 10:30 a.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in St. Pio of Pietrelcina Parish at Our Lady of Pompeii Church at 11:00 a.m. Interment will follow in All Saints Cemetery. Family and friends may call WEDNESDAY (TODAY) from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Wounded Warrior Project at woundedwarriorproject.org or a charity of one's choice. Charlene, my sincere condolences. I didn't know Mark but through the driving school, his name would often come up and the comments from others were always positive. Take pride Charleen, you, your children, and your grandchildren made for a great family and a great life. Joe Carbone

Hi Dad,

You never had to say much to teach me what mattered. You showed it in the way you labored without complaint, the way you stood by Mom with steadfast and loving devotion, the way your love for Christine and me never wavered, even when life did.

You were the kind of man who made others feel safe just by being there. Strong, steady, deeply kind. You didn´t chase admiration, but you earned it. And somehow, you made space in your heart for more than just your own family. Anyone lucky enough to know you carried away a piece of your goodness, like warmth from a fire that lingers in your sweater long after you´ve walked away.

You were never gaudy, gleaming, or showy. Never one for the kind of gold that draws attention but offers little strength. You were the metal you loved so much: pewter - classically handsome, sturdy, quietly dignified. The kind of metal that holds its shape throughout the years, not despite the wear, but because of it. In a world obsessed with shine, I´ve come to see that it´s pewter that endures. That´s what you were to us. Grounding, not ritzy. Not loud, but lasting. And I will carry the weight of your strength in my hands for the rest of my life.

There will never be another you. As your birth sign implies, you had the heart of a lion. But you also had the gentleness, peacefulness, and majesty of a deer in a quiet winter wood. I feel that truth in the silence, in the spaces you once filled so easily. The world is still spinning, but it feels just a little less full without you in it.

I love you, Dad.
