Every day, during the late 60's, I would walk past Mr. Nowicki's house on my way to high school.  Some days I would hear an organ being put through its paces and the music would fill the air, or if I was lucky, a calliope would be playing, and it was just wonderful.
But as I walked by, my eyes would always glance towards the left side of the barn where I could make out the slightest outline of a car, hidden beneath hay and a canvas tarp.   I guessed from the shape that it was from the twenties, just the style that I loved.
I was too shy to ask Mr. Nowicki about the car, so day after day I would walk by the house and daydream that the car was mine.  One day I got the courage to sneak up to the barn and look under the tarp and hay to see if I was right.  It was a Dodge, from the twenties (29) and I fell in love.  In a year or so I would be 16 and have my drivers license, and it would be so "cool" to drive my dream car.
I begged my father to go see if Mr. Nowicki would sell the car.  We considered the possibility that he might be saving the car for himself, or that he would want more money than we could afford.
My father said he would go and talk with Mr. Nowicki.  I waited and I waited. Then one day as I was coming home from school, I looked over and the car was gone.  My heart dropped.  I knew when I sneaked up to the car and moved the tarp to see the car better,  I exposed more of the front of the radiator, but it didn't bother me... until now.
I walked the rest of the way down Milford Point Rd., turned down Kittery St, headed right on Old Point Rd and finally took a left into Beechwood Ave.  My every step tortured and yet hopeful at the same time.   Everything looked the same.   I came in the front door, walked through the kitchen and looked out the back window.  There she was!? She still had bits and pieces of hay along the running boards and on the front fenders.   She was the most beautiful thing I had ever seen.
??Later, my Dad told me about his conversation with Mr. Nowicki.  Initially he had said he didn't want to sell the car, and wondered why my Dad was asking about it.  My Dad told him about me, he reconsidered.  "Okay, it's yours, and I won't take more than 50 dollars for it."
"So to you Mr. Nowicki, I say 'Thank you'. Thank you for your kindness and for making a kid's dream come true.  God bless."
