Michael DiVerniero Obituary

DIVERNIERO, MICHAEL “MIC-DEV” Michael “Mic-Dev” DiVerniero, 56, of East Haven, passed away April 14, 2014, at CT Hospice. He was born June 28, 1957, in New Haven, to Owen and Helen (Boyle) DiVerniero. Michael is survived by mother, Helen, of Branford; loving wife of 18 years, Julie (Anastasio) DiVerniero; and two daughters, Ellyn and Aimee DiVerniero. Mic-Dev is also survived by brothers: Stephen DiVerniero (Ellen) of Hamden, Joseph DiVerniero (Laura) of East Haven; sisters: Beth Fortuna (James) of Hamden, MaryRose Wiesner (Scott) of Monrovia, CA; three nephews and two nieces. Mic-Dev graduated from Southern CT State University in 1979 with a BA in Social Work. He was employed at ACES for 34 years where he touched the lives of many students. He was an All-State swimmer at Branford High School in 1975. While at SCSU, he excelled in water polo as a goal tender. He was twice selected to the All New England Water Polo team. Mic’s greatest thrill in life was coaching swimming. His passion for coaching created a lifetime legacy. After serving as an Assistant for the Orange Otter Swim Team from 1987 to 1989, he started the Orange Swim Club and eventually founded the Amity Regional Aquatic Club in 1995. During his tenure at ARAC, he developed the program into one of the finest Age Group swim teams in the state of CT. He was twice voted Connecticut Age Group Coach of the year. He also served for 25 years as Co-Head Coach of the Paradise County Club in Hamden with his brother Steve. He was largely responsible for helping to build that program into a swimming dynasty, winning 24 championships in 21 years. Family will receive friends from 4 to 8 PM Monday, April 21, 2014, at the Clancy Funeral Home, 43 Kirkham Ave., East Haven. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 AM on Tuesday, April 22, at St. Vincent de Paul Church, East Haven. Burial will be private. Dear Steve and Ellen, I was so sad to hear of Mic Dev's passing. He was a role model for me and his coaching was a legacy to be proud of. I have so many fond memories of him from the Paradise days - "eye of the tiger"...rafting down the Farmington River...In my mind's eye I can picture him by the pool - forever a part of so many happy memories -
