Michael Parker Obituary

Parker, Dr. Michael F.
Dr. Michael F. Parker of Madison, Connecticut passed away on May 21, 2019 in the comfort of his home, surrounded by his loving wife and children. He was 67 years old.
Michael was born on August 29, 1951 in Snyder, Oklahoma to Margie and Claude Parker. The second of five children and the grandson of farmers, he was taught the value of hard work, self-sufficiency, and providing for the family. He lived his life in this spirit wherever he went—from his family's move to Texas where he attended Austin College and Baylor College of Medicine, to his own journey to the northeast where he'd meet his wife Clara and, soon, build a family of his own.
The young physician and registered nurse met when Michael was an intern with the United States Public Health Service in a hospital on Staten Island. Theirs was a whirlwind romance; they fell in love and were married seven months later, in 1979. Dr. and Mrs. Parker started their life together in Alexandria Bay, but soon found their way to Connecticut and, ultimately, to Madison. While it was the antique auctions in the VFW hall and fried clams at Lenny and Joe's that brought them to town, it was the cozy, safe, enchanted nature of the beautiful shoreline community that kept the Parker family here, in the same house, for nearly four decades.
Michael was compassionate, gentle, intelligent, and humble. He was the kind of doctor who would sit with you for a full hour during a physical to make sure he heard every word you had to say, and give you his home phone to call him on Christmas morning in case you needed to talk more. He was the kind of father who would beam with unbridled pride at the achievements—big and small—of his children, and stop at nothing to provide them with the very best opportunities and privileges imaginable. He was the kind of friend who would open his heart and mind to share in the depths of your sorrows and your joys, and give freely of anything he had if it could bring you comfort and peace. And he was the kind of husband who, after celebrating forty years of marriage, remained in awe of the fierce love and devotion his wife showed him and his children.
Dr. Parker was the perfect blend of artist and scientist—he read Walt Whitman and T.S. Eliot as often as he read Einstein. He was a lover of the classics and the contemporary—he could hum every note of Die Zauberflöte and Hey Jude. He spent his time in museums and art galleries, in the passenger seat of fast cars, and on the Atlantic ocean, chasing striped bass and bluefin tuna. Whether at his desk at Internal Medicine of East Haven, his home in Madison, or his getaway on his beloved Martha's Vineyard, he was never without a subtle smile and a twinkle in his eye. He was a philosopher and a critic, a progressive and a man of traditions, a poet, a clamdigger, a primary care doctor, a dreamer. Most of all, he was a lover, and well-loved.
In his life, Michael endured the loss of his parents and his older sister, Jan. In his death, he will be remembered by his wife, Clara; his children, Caitlin (and son-in-law Rick), John-Michael, Luke, and Sam; his brother David and his sisters Andrea and Julie; his amigo Ioannis; and his staff, colleagues, family members, and friends across the country.
Michael's services will begin on Tuesday May 28 with a wake from 4-9 PM at Swan Funeral Home, 825 Boston Post Rd in Madison. A mass of Christian burial will be held on Wednesday May 29 at 3 PM at St. George Parish, 33 Whitfield St in Guilford. In lieu of flowers, his family suggests that donations in Dr. Parker's memory be made to any of the following: VNA Community Healthcare & Hospice (753 Boston Post Rd, Guilford, CT 06437), Madison A Better Chance (PO Box 371, Madison, CT 06443), or the Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease Foundation (3610 W. I really don't need a reminder of Dr. Parker - every time I enter a doctors office - I'm always wishing it was to see Dr. Parker. Everytime I have to call a doctor or a doctors office - I'm wishing it was Dr. Parker's. Dr. Parker made a lasting impression on me and he is always in my mind and my heart. My continued sincerest condolences to his family whom I'm sure remember the husband, father, doctor and man he was. I know I'll never forget him. God bless.

It has been a surreal year without you, my friend. A day does not pass that I do not think about you. I'm convinced it was your spirit that came to my bird feeder - one year ago yesterday - to say goodbye. You wore the plumage of a Rose-breasted Grosbeak - red, white, and black - the colors of the Texas flag - your home ground. I'll give ya' the black for navy blue - since we all thought you colored your hair...;-). You didn't. You were handsome and present - as you chomped away at the sunflower kernels. It wasn't the Bluefin Tuna we loved - but that's okay. In the 25 years of active bird-watching at my home, and abroad, never had a Grosbeak appeared before my eyes. After a good munch, the majestic Michael flew off and up to the branch tips of a tall white oak tree. The winds were brisk, the new spring leaves rustled, and off you sailed. Be safe, free, and soar with angels on your new journey. Meanwhile, I'll always be on high alert for seeing you again. You were my dearest friend on this earth. So many fun memories. It was never enough. I miss you and I love you.

Micahel and I shared an apartment at Baylor College of Medicine. He was a smart man with a sweet and sensitive soul. I am so glad we shared those 3 years together So many good memories:. Grilling steaks on the roof, going to cowboy bars, and discos. Driving Houston in Michael's triumph. Listening to Wille Nelson's Phases and Stages. I loved you Michael and am sad to hear of your passing.

Mike was a friend and classmate at South Garland HS in Texas. We are all sad to hear of his passing. Having read all of the condolences sent and viewed all of the photos, it is clear that Mike led a life we should all aspire to. He was a great guy, kind to all and a brilliant student and Doctor. Texas suffered a great loss when he gave his heart to Connecticut. Our loss was your gain. RIP, Dr. Parker. you will be sorely missed.
When I hear of the loss of a great person such as Mike, I am reminded of a passage from Hamlet that I feel is Shakespeare's finest . . . . "Now cracks a noble heart --Good night, sweet prince. And flights of angels sing thee to thy rest!" (Hamlet, Act V Scene II)

He cared about others, and turned his caring into a wonderful life as a doctor. My condolences go to the family he loved, friends he cultivated, patients he cared for and supported, and all lives he has touched. With deepest sympathy, Doloris Forsyth Lajoie

Michael was a member of our 1969 S Garland High School Class in TX. Now as we prep for our 50th reunion we are sad to hear of Mike's passing. No surprise to me and our classmates that he was beloved by his family and patients. In school he was always kindhearted, thoughtful, and very good natured. RIP Mike, we will miss you, and thank you for being a memorable part of our South Garland Class of 69 family.

My husband and I had Dr Parker for a physician for over 27 years. He always listened to everything you said and never rushed your visit. He would stay late for 7:00 appointments. He would always call you back in the evening if you needed to speak with him. He was truly an amazing doctor who was taken away too early. I would ask how his family was doing and his eyes would light up. Our sincere condolences to his wife and children. He will truly be missed by our communities. Rest in peace.

I was so shocked and saddened to hear of Dr. Parker's passing. I had just seen him seven weeks earlier for my physical; and if he was in any discomfort, he never showed it. He was his usual concerned, compassionate and friendly self. I have been his patient for at least 30 yrs. His passing has left a deep void in my life and, I am sure, in the life of every patient who was honored to call him their physician and friend. You will be very difficult to replace. May God welcome you into his heavenly home, and may God give your loving family the strength to bear this most difficult time
Rest in Peace, Dr. Parker.

What we'll always remember was Mike's joie de vivre - his joy in living. He lived so fully and enthusiastically in each moment, and gave every individual his undivided and caring attention. Along with his incomparable dedication to his patients, we recall how he devoted time with family and friends to adventures of travel (from the Grand Canyon to Greece), the pleasures of sailing at Martha's Vineyard, and epicurean delights (fresh dug clams, and Clara's Italian cuisine). He was a consummate family man and an unequaled, irreplaceable friend. Our entire family mourns his loss but will forever hold him in our hearts.

My wife and I ( and half my wife's family) were patients of Dr Parker for close to 40 years and while our appts were the typical doctor/ patient interaction, there were the smiles, handshakes, and sweet gestures that he would make that endeared him to my wife and Myself. My wife's blood pressure spikes and she gets extremely nervous every time she enters a doctors office, but not Dr Parker's because he had incredible ways to relax and put her at ease. I was incredibly lucky because I was forced to retire as a police officer fairly early in my career with a head injury, back, neck, and other injuries and over the last 25 years, Dr Parker made sure to coordinate all my care with several providers and give input to assure the best care possible.
. Over the years and at Every single appointed, we talked about our families and I would say how lucky and proud I was of my growing family, but he always talked about the love for his wife and kids and the pride in their accomplishments.
Several years ago my daughter became a Physicians Asst and practices across the street, but I never considered leaving his care because of his compassion, true care for his patients and the utmost confidence in his care. My wife and I are devastated, but can't imagine your loss, your pain, and your suffering.
He will be truly missed!!!

Dr Parker was my doctor for almost 30 years. He saw me through
cancer and some other serious health issues in my life. He was also
there for losses in my life as well. He always had a smile and a laugh
and listened to whatever was bothering me. There are and will be no
other doctors like Michael Parker. He was one of a kind. I was devastated when I lost my job and could no longer see him as a patient due to insurance issues. I will never forget all the years that I was able to call him my doctor. A life gone way too soon. My prayers are with his wife and children at this sad time. May you rest in peace Dr Parker.

May 27, 2019

Dr. Parker was our family physician for many years. He was also our parents doctor. We all loved him because he was an outstanding person who was caring, gentle, funny and would always listen and help with any issues.

Many times he would be working late in his office and make calls after 8 PM giving you your blood test results. He went well beyond what you would expect from a good doctor.

Words can't express the sadness we feel on the loss of such a kind and gentle and caring person. It will be an impossible task to find another doctor to fill his shoes.

Hearing of Doctor Parker's untimely passing was a huge shock to our family and he will be greatly missed.

Our prayers and heartfelt condolences go out to the Parker family.

A few years back, Dr Parker, my physician for close to thirty years, stepped out of the restaurant where he was dining, and spoke to me on the phone in the restaurant's parking lot about a serious health issue I was having. It was around 10pm on a Saturday evening in January, the temps were frigid. He spoke with me for close to 45 minutes, trying to get me on the right track going forward. Bless his kind and generous heart for giving me such attention and comfort in my time of need, at the same time forfeiting his own comfort in a parking lot on that cold night.
Flash forward to a few months ago, when he was helping me sort out a sudden physical issue I began experiencing: upon leaving the exam room, I turned to him and thanked him for rising to the challenge of balancing my own holistic approach to my personal health care with his vast knowledge and conventional wisdom. He put his hand on my shoulder and said It is my absolute pleasure to have you as my patient. Those would be the last words he ever said to me. I will always treasure this memory of him.
I sincerely hope that my words and the remarkable memories of so many others serve to give his family some measure of comfort and peace as they deal with such an enormous loss.

To Dr. Parker's family: I am so sad to learn of his passing. He was my primary physician for the last 17 years and always, always had the time to listen to you.. In January, I had my complete physical and Dr. Parker was most concerned about how I was coping with the loss of my beloved sister just one month prior.
