Michael Susman Obituary

Michael Susman
Michael Susman, of New Haven, Connecticut, passed away peacefully on November 18, 2021 at the age of 90. He was born in New Haven on March 20, 1931, the beloved son of the late Taiba and Tevya Susman, brother of the late Sylvia Stein and Ruth Weiss. He met his wife, Barbara Witten Susman, on a Woodmont beach at the very mature age of 15 – old enough to know that his dating days were over. They were happily married for 67 years, until her death in August of 2019. Michael leaves behind his three children Marjorie, Matthew and Rebecca, and their spouses Marian, Tory and Daniel, his four grandchildren, David, Anna, Isabel and Lily, his brothers and sisters-in-laws, Dick, Marcia, Marvin and Susan Witten, and a wonderful extended family of nieces, nephews and friends.
Michael received both his B.A. and J.D. from the University of Connecticut (paying for his law degree with poker winnings). He became editor of the UCONN Law Review, and graduated at the top of his class in 1956. In 1960, he was a founding partner of the law firm of Susman & Duffy. He was deeply respected by both his fellow lawyers and devoted clients for more than 50 years.
Michael traveled the world with Barbara, Marcia and Dick, was an expert skier (snow: Okemo; water: Woodmont), made a superb apple tart, and mixed a mean martini. He threw many famous lobster parties, and spent every summer of his 90 years, including his last, at the beach in Woodmont. He had a true passion for life's pleasures, and eagerly shared that passion with his family and friends. Michael's zest for life will continue to shape the lives of those who were so very fortunate to have known and loved him.
Funeral Services will be held at Workman's Circle Cemetery, 50 Farwell St., West Haven, CT on Sunday afternoon, November 21, at 2:00 pm. The Robert E. Shure & Son Funeral Home, 543 George St. New Haven is in care of arrangements. Period of Mourning will be held at the family's home in New Haven, following the service until 8pm (vaccinated only, please). Memorial Contributions may be sent to SaveTheSound.org/donate. We are quite saddened to hear of Michael´s passing. He was a kind, caring man and a happy addition to our cousin pool. Please let Marcia(my double cousin) and Dick(also, a cousin) know that we are thinking of them and the whole family. May Michael´s memory be for a blessing.

With love. There are so many good memories of Michael and my late husband Allen. They loved and respected each other. They had such a good time forming their law firm and continuing it. Michael remained a good friend to me.

Michael was the smartest lawyer I have ever known. On many occasions he would say to me it was remarkable that people would pay him simply to think. He was a most wonderful mentor and to whom I will always be indebted.
