Mirene Gomez Obituary

Mirene "Mimi" Gomez
Mirene "Mimi" Gomez was born in Palma Soriano, Cuba, into a family of journalists, farmers, and patriots who fought in the Cuban War of Independence against Spain, and with the US forces in the War of 1898.
From an early age, Mimi's intellectual curiosity and desire to excel were evident. In the 1950s, she attended Teacher's College in Cuba, becoming a competitive cross-country athlete. Following her move to the United States, she continued her teaching profession at Elias Howe school in Bridgeport, where she was a bilingual kindergarten teacher for 25 years. She also pursued her formal graduate studies at Sacred Heart University, eventually earning a Doctorate in Education.
While living in Havana, Cuba, she became a student at the Alliance Francaise and immersed herself in the French language and culture, becoming certified as a simultaneous translator for French and French-speaking governments and cultural delegations to Cuba.
Following her retirement, Mimi traveled extensively throughout Europe, settling down in the Town of Shelton to be the primary caretaker for her ailing mother. She loved her neighbors, Dawn and Al, and went to many of their gatherings, as they made her feel like family.
Mimi was intensely patriotic and cherished everything about her adoptive country. She ran for elected state office a number of times, being at the front slate of candidates who, in 1982, met with President Ronald Reagan.
She leaves her beloved cousins, William Botta and his wife Teri of Naugatuck; their family, William, Suzanne Botta Sullivan, Nicole Ferris, Timothy Larrabee and Danielle Botta; Louis Botta and his husband William of NH, Maria Gomez and Juan Gelabert of Milford, Louis Reyes, Ariadna Rodriguez, Elba Rosa Gomez, Antonieta Gomez, Reginaldo Perez Gomez, Lourdes González, Carlos Perez Gomez, and Tere Barrios, Norca Hinustroza, Raul Hernandez-Baquero, from Florida; and many other cousins and friends.
Funeral services will be held Saturday at 10:00am, meeting directly in St. Margaret Mary Church, 50 Donovan Lane, Shelton, CT 06484, with a Mass of Christian Burial. Interment will follow in Park Cemetery, Bridgeport. In lieu of flowers, please make a contribution in her memory to www.suzukischools.org . To send condolences please visit www.redgatehennessy.com .

I worked with Mirene when I first started my career as a SLP with BPS at Elias Howe. She was a wonderful teacher to her kindergarteners and mentor to me, as she taught me to believe in myself and my skills. May you rest in peace Ms. Gomez. The world is a better place because of all the lives you touched.

Mirene will always have a special place in my heart. She was an exceptional educator and someone who lived every second of her life without fear. I cherish the memories I have with her. When I taught at Elias Howe/Cesar Batalla with her, upon her retirement, she gave me a little Christmas tree she would put up each year. She would buy a present for each of her students and put them under that tree. She gave so much love to all of them. I still have that Christmas tree and think of her every year when I bring it out. You were a bright light for so many. You will be greatly missed.
