Nathan Silverstein Obituary

Nathan Silverstein
March 14, 2024
Nathan M. Silverstein died peacefully on March 14. He was 100 years old. Nathan was born on February 1,1924 in Hartford, CT. He grew up with his parents Dora (Kosofsky) and Samuel Silverstein and his three siblings Irving, Evelyn (Fain) and Melvin (Mike).
While attending Weaver H.S. in Hartford he was active in athletics and began his days early in the morning delivering milk along with his brothers Irv and Mike for the family business, Peoples Dairy. Nate enlisted and served in the Navy during WWII. He was always appreciative of the opportunities afforded him from the GI Bill. After his Honorable Discharge he graduated from Boston University Law School and NYU Law school with a Masters in tax law. He developed a successful law practice that lasted well into his nineties. His reputation as trusted counsel was evident by how many clients became lifelong friends.
Sometime in the 1980's Nathan began his life with Cynthia Harris. They shared a love of many things, enriching their lives with travel, art, culture and close friendships. Nathan split his time between New Haven and New York. You were as likely to see him at Woolsey Hall or Yale Rep as you would Lincoln Center. He was an ardent supporter of many arts organizations through the years, particularly the New Haven Symphony.
Throughout his life, Nathan was physically active. In childhood and high school it was sandlot baseball and basketball. He jogged before it was a popular trend. About 1964 he thought it would be good to learn how to ski and eventually brought along the family. This led to wonderful, life changing years spending every winter weekend in Ludlow, VT and many trips seeking western powder. He also became an avid fly fisherman. He had fishing adventures near and far, again developing lifelong friendships along the way. He will be missed at an annual fishing weekend spent with his son and close friends this April. His most consistent individual commitment in athletics was to paddle and racquet sports. Nathan spent many hours on courts with friendly opponents throughout New Haven County and Manhattan. He was still volleying tennis balls at 96.
Nathan was predeceased by his sister Evelyn and brothers Irv and Mike. Cynthia Harris also predeceased Nathan. He is survived by his children, Robert Silverstein and his wife Eunice Froeliger of Charlotte, VT, Richard P. Silverstein and his wife Jamie Alosi of New Haven, CT and Nancy Ashcroft of Guilford, CT. He also leaves his grandchildren, Molly Bierman and husband Sam of Sparks, MD, Michael Silverstein and Greta Van Campen of Thomaston, ME, Tess Ashcroft of Delray, FL, Nathan Ashcroft and his wife Michayla of Silver Spring, MD, Will Ashcroft of Brooklyn, NY. He was also fortunate to spend time with his great-grandchildren, Noa Mae Silverstein, Nellie Ault Silverstein and Bodi Bierman. The family wishes to thank his friends in New York and Connecticut for the love and care they shared with Nathan, especially in recent years.
There are no plans for a public service at this time. Nathan was a strong supporter of the Yale Sappern Memorial Fund. You can honor his life by making a donation to the Yale Sappern Memorial Fund, c/o Parrett Porto, 2319 Whitney Ave., Hamden, CT. 06518. Arrangements are with the Hawley Lincoln Memorial, Guilford.

R.I.P UNCLE NATE.

UNCLE NATE was an interesting & kind man.
On my 1st adventurous road trip bringn him 2 New york. I learned he was a suddle tender & Gentle man after he fussed & attempted to boss me bc I drove my car to the front of Silverstein's office to pick him up (lol)& did NOT allow him to walk.

Yet after that introduction He & I got along fine & dandy.
On our trip to Ny, Uncle Nate ate some of my cheetos crunchy cheese doodles, tasted a lil piece of my candy as he listened 2 the smooth Jazz I played as he waved his hands to the beat of the instruments playing.

Lmbo, Uncle Nate said; "u sure do drive fast", sat back w/ his seat laid back & said "He need to use the latrene at the rest stop coming up." He dozed off until we got close to the rest stop.

Our next adventure was me picking him up from the rehab after he fell.
Uncle Nate was a determined, tenacious & stubborn man (lol)
He said what he felt & I enjoyed that w/ him as I never knew either of my Grandfathers.

Uncle Nate would come into Silverstein's office faithfully every Tuesday, handle his business & then just relax & nap in Silverstein's office.

I'd say "Hello Uncle Nate, how u feeln today?"
He'd say, "I'm okay Deserie, just napping."
I'd say Uncle Nate, "did u eat &/ or do u want something 2 drink?"
He'd say, "No Deserie, I'm okay, I'm waiting on such & such 2 go to lunch!"

Our very last outing was Uncle Nate, Jamie & Myself at Nellies & the food was fantastic. Jamie & him conversed & bonded throughout dinner.
After dinner we dropped Uncle Nate off (of course he was stubborn) & did NOT want us 2 walk w/ him 2 his door. Yet both Jamie & I adamant persistence w/ Uncle Nate; he just gave in & let us walk him to his door!

I haven't known Uncle Nate long yet that lil time was enough time to understand the man he became & it was great pleasure to call him "Uncle Nate" & adopt him as my Grandfather I never had!!

Silverstein, my condolences & know that ur dad loved u whole heartedly!!!
To the other siblings, my condolences.
May u find comfort, peace w/ Blessings & healing throughout

Rest In Peace Uncle Nate
Love Infinte Deserie (ISH)

Dear Nancy, Richard, Robert and Family,
I was so saddened to learn of your father´s passing! What a wonderful man! He was a lifelong friend of my Dad, David Lipton. Natie as I called him played cards with my Dad and the other friends in their group when they were all young fathers starting out!!. I remember how friendly and nice he was to me those many years ago! He was a loyal and honorable man! Being active his whole life served him well!! He will definitely be missed! May his memory be for a blessing!!

Rick,Jamie and Silverstein family. I am so sorry to hear that you lost Nate. I have known and admired him for 52 years as a friend and fellow practitioner of law. He was a true gentleman in every sense of the word. He was always the best dressed attorney walking the streets of New Haven where I would frequently encounter him and spend a few minutes in conversation. Of all the attorneys that my wife Kathleen ever met , Nate was her favorite. That is just how Nate´s persona affected most people who were fortunate enough to know him. He will be missed by me and Kathleen. We will never forget him and we share in your loss. Charlie and Kathleen Donato.
