Ralph Spinnler Obituary

Spinnler, Ralph
Ralph F. Spinnler of Branford, CT, formerly of Glastonbury, CT, died peacefully at his home on Saturday October 14, 2017, surrounded by his family. The youngest child of Rose and Aloysius Spinnler, Ralph was born on July 25, 1939 in Lynnbrook, New York. A graduate of Lynnbrook High School, Ralph received a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from Duke University and a Masters degree from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. He earned a commission in the United States Navy through the ROTC program at Duke. Ralph married his hometown sweetheart, Cynthia Williams, and they moved to Yorktown, VA before settling in Connecticut. He joined Raymond Engineering in 1969 where he began a project to investigate the market potential and technical feasibility of a wireless transmission system for communicating data from an oil well to the surface. A joint venture company was formed with Raymond and Elf Aquataine and in 1972, Teleco Oilfield Services Inc. was incorporated. Teleco began commercial services in 1978 with operations in the Gulf of Mexico and the North Sea and in 1979 Ralph was elected Chief Executive Officer. In March 1984, Teleco Oilfield Services Inc was acquired by Sonat Inc. Ralph remained as CEO of Teleco until the company was sold to Bakery Hughes in 1992. Ralph took great pride in the Teleco family. Above all he believed in the importance of hiring the best people. After retirement, he was honored to serve on the board of APS Inc., a company started by a group of former employees. Ralph Spinnler is survived by his wife of 56 years, Cynthia Marie Williams Spinnler and their three daughters, Julie Spinnler Crager and her three children Jack, Elizabeth, and Ned; Marie Spinnler Gooding and her two sons Griffin and Grady; and Laurie Spinnler Bonner, her husband Michael Bonner and their two children Hadley and Cole. He is survived by his sister, Florence Spinnler of Boise, Idaho and by numerous nieces and nephews. Ralph was predeceased by his elder sister, Evelyn Spinnnler Unger and his beloved brother Robert Spinnler. Ralph will be remembered as a loving, kind, and generous family man. He enjoyed teaching and sharing his many passions, including tennis, golf, art, photography, and skiing with his daughters, grandchildren and many close friends. Ralph had a special love and connection with the nature and beauty of Nantucket. He treasured his family time there sailing, fishing, and teaching his daughters life lessons. A true engineer at heart, he took great pleasure in tinkering around on his work bench and making potato launchers, kites, model airplanes and boats to share with his family.
Calling hours will be on Tuesday October 17 from 4-8 P.M. at the W.S. Clancy Memorial Funeral Home, 244 North Main St. Branford. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Therese Church in Branford on Wednesday at 11:00 AM. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Ralph's name may be made to a Scholarship Fund at Duke University, Pratt School of Engineering. Pleae see online memorial @ www.wsclancy.com.

My much belated condolences to the Spinnler family members.
I worked for Teleco Oilfield Services at the small west coast headquarters in Ventura, California from 1982-1992, through the SONAT, Eastman Christenson and Baker Hughes transitions. We were charged by Mr. Spinnler to market, operate, grow and service the early iterations of Teleco's new MWD/FE equipment to the large California offshore drilling markets. When we built a custom facility to handle this, Mr. Spinnler came out to Ventura and christened it the star of the Teleco facilities. He also gave great pep talks to us when we were in Meriden for training. He was a true gentleman, down to earth and a good leader. We were all proud to work with him in those early days of MWD/FE, and I know he would be amazed and very proud at how far it has come today and from what he started in those days of so long ago. And I'm sure some of the fellow employees I worked with in Ventura, Lafayette, Alaska and Meriden to name a fewDave Henry, Steve Krase, Damon Wiley, Drake Botello, Thom Riggs, Kim Welker, Bill Hyne, Dave Santley, Jay Edwards, Grady Crowe, Rob Sibley, Carey Bartlett, Steve Gould, Jack Chandler, Bill Turner, and many, many more would feel the same!! Thank you for all you did Mr. Spinnler!!

Cynthia,

Pat and I were saddened to learn of Ralph's passing. He and I and his brothers at Sigma Chi shared four wonderful years together at Duke and we all enjoyed keeping up with Ralph at our five year reunions. He always had a twinkle in his eye and never met a stranger. None of us were surprised at his success in business and his family life. We'll miss him but never forget him.

Ralph was a genuine nice guy. I remember him failing to suppress a smile and eyebrows raising as he became involved in conversation. He was open to ideas from others and engaged them as equals regardless of their age or position. I learned from him. He had a spirit of adventure when traveling and an inquisitive nature that made his presence a pleasure.

Ralph Spinnler was the President of the first real company I ever worked for. As a young man working in the oilfield in the Gulf of Mexico I was enthralled at how an aerospace engineer "invented and ruggedized" equipment that would hold up under the harshest of deep drilling conditions. His company, Teleco, was a great organization. I still have friends and memories from there that I cherish and will never forget. Rest in peace Mr. Spinnler.

Mr Spinnler- He was a legend- someone I looked up to from the time I was a young girl. I was lucky to grow up next to the Spinnlers and spent time with them both in Glastonbury and Nantucket. Mr. Spinnler could fix anything and I remember him inventing things all the time. He inventing something to take pictures of the house high up in the sky- long before there were drones. When talking with you- he always made you feel like the most important person. It is only in retrospect that I realize how busy he really was. He will live on through his children and grandchildren- who are similar to him in so many ways. You will be missed.
Love

Mr. Spinnler was a legend to me-I grew up in the house next to the Spinnlers and was best friends with his daughter, Marie. He could fix anything and was always inventing neat gadgets. I remember when he created something to take a picture from the sky- long before there were things called drones. He always had time for me- in retrospect I realize how busy he was-he had a way of making you feel like you were the most important person at that moment. He will be missed- but I will carry with me so many wonderful memories. I already see how he lives on through his children and his grandchildren- who remind me of him.

I worked at Teleco Oilfield Services and APS Inc. I always respected Ralph as he always respected me. It was a gift to have a CEO who was approachable, humble and genuinely concerned about the welfare of his employees. My deepest condolences. He will be greatly missed by everyone that had the pleasure of working for him.
