Stephen Babbitz Obituary

Stephen M. Babbitz
Our devoted and generous dad, Stephen M. Babbitz, passed away on February 23, 2024. He was born in New Haven, Connecticut on January 11, 1943, to Herman and Ruth (Novick) Babbitz.
Dad spoke often about his early years in Westville on Victory Drive, Oak Street and his various boyhood shenanigans. In the mid-1950's the family relocated to 212 Boston Post Road in Orange, opened Herman's Army Navy and lived in an apartment above the store. Young Steve loved Amity High School, hanging out with his eclectic pals and being outdoors. While he worked hard every day of his life, he did get himself "sent to boarding school" for a bit. His first cousins were like siblings to him, and he told many stories about happy times while growing up. While at the University of Bridgeport, on a double date with a fraternity brother, Dad met Susan Detwiler and they married in 1964. The couple welcomed 2 babies in 15 months and moved into the home they built in Orange, where they lived for the rest of their lives.
He played the accordion, hated Jello and refused to use sunscreen. Dad understood everything mechanical, could dock any vessel, build skating rinks, sand boxes and swing sets, ride horses Western style and was our resident Medic - thanks to the U.S. Army. Steve was a dedicated volunteer for the fire department, and we have joyful recollections of the carnival every summer. Herman's eventually became the Pants Pocket, and after leaving retail Steve spent over 30 years at Norwalk Cove Marina, on the water, where he most preferred to be. The family enjoyed decades of boating and treasures memories of Dad's favorite places, Montauk and Singer Island. He had an affinity for all animals large and small, warm weather, hunting, fishing, long walks in the woods, and a Beefeater, on the rocks with olives.
Steve is survived by his daughter Mara and her husband Ken, son David and his wife Eileen, adoring grandchildren Nicholas and his wife Rebecca, Abigail, Adam, Hannah and Zachary, twin great granddaughters Lilah and Lucy, Susan's dear sister Marcia and her family, many beloved cousins and the best friends a man could hope for.
We were fortunate to spend Dad's 80th birthday with him at his regular table in his favorite restaurant Gabriele's. Our parents had good and healthy lives, they wished for children who love each other and recognize the importance of being together. We will always be grateful for all that they gave us. Steve was laid to rest beside his wife during a personal and very fitting private burial ceremony. To best honor Dad's life, enjoy something simple like feeding the birds, dine out with family, or share an old fish tale. If it is your custom to do so, donations may be made to Congregation B'nai Jacob, 75 Rimmon Road in Woodbridge, CT 06525.

I am saddened by the news of Red's passing, as he and I were the closest of friends back when we lived just two doors apart on Victory Drive in the West Hills Housing Development. We managed to get ourselves in trouble at least once a week back in our early years of 5 to about 12 years old, back before Red moved to Orange in the house on the top of Herman's new Army-Navy store in Orange, CT.

And even then, Herman would pick me up every once in a while and bring me up to their house, and Red and I would usually go fishing in the little pond across the street, seldom with any luck in catching fish, but that didn't really matter.

Those were the last days that I saw Red, as he went away to school in Massachusetts (I think). I did run into him once, at an Army Reserve Training center in New Haven, several years after we were both out of school, and that was pretty much the last time I saw him.

His passing though, has made me remember the good times that we had as kids, and I although those memories will stay with me forever, I wish that we would have been able remember them together.

David, Eileen, and family,
So sorry to hear if your father's passing. Cherish all the wonderful memories. He taught you well David. I learned that over my 13 years working for you. You are a wonderful human and you & Eileen passed those traits onto your kids, as your Dad passed them on to you.
Condolences to all....
