Stephen Colhoun III
October 29, 2020
Addison—Stephen D Colhoun III passed away on 29 October 2020 at his home in Addison, ME after a battle with cancer. He was born on 4 May 1950 in New York City to Rosalie D. Fletcher and Stephen D. Colhoun Jr. Steve followed his father's love of photography, attending classes in creative and commercial photography at the Philadelphia Community College and Cape Cod Community College. He enjoyed painting, travel, loved playing his flute, but really embraced writing, poetry, and journalism, being an enthusiastic contributor to his college campus newspaper; he went on to contribute some features in the Cape Cod Times, and then to become a frequent contributor as the "suburban correspondent" to the New Haven Register, New Haven, CT. In 1973 Steve graduated from the University of Pennsylvania, PA, with a BA in Social Psychology, and from that he followed a career in helping others with special needs at such places as SCSU in New Haven, CT, at SARAH SENECA in Guilford, CT, at Marrakesh, Inc, in New Haven, CT, and at the Institute for Professional Practice, Woodbridge, CT; he was a counselor, a job coach, and a tutor for people with special needs and for children.
On 5 May 1990, Steve married the love of his life Cheryl K Holbrook at a ceremony at his father's home in Fairfield, CT. On a trip up to Downeast Maine to show Steve Cheryl's childhood stomping grounds, they found some of her family's old property for sale and it was decided to purchase it and settle in Addison. They were extremely happy in Addison and established themselves in the community. Cheryl died from advanced cancer in 2007 and Steve sought to honour her memory by continuing local volunteer work and looking after members of her family, and so was adopted into the "Carver Clan".
Steve himself succumbed to cancer at home and is deeply missed by family and friends. We think that he never fully realized just how much he was loved and appreciated, which is a testimony to his humility. He is survived by his sisters Lynn, Lisa, Gillian, and Julie, by Cheryl's sons Joseph, and Michael, and grandson Michael Jr, by his Carver Family and countless friends, all of whom can testify to such a worthy, generous, and kind soul. Our lives are surely a bit emptier for the loss of Steve.
There will be a graveside ceremony at noon on Saturday, 5 June, at the Carver Family burying ground at the Carver Farm on Carver Lane with a gathering afterwards for refreshments at Steve's home on Bay Drive. If you should wish to join us and require more information, please contact Joseph at
