Stuart Richmond Johnson, age 86, was born Jan. 24, 1932 to Herbert and Avis Tobey Johnson and died Aug. 12, 2018 at St. Raphael's Hospital after a brief illness. He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Paula Browne Johnson of Hamden, daughters Karen Johnson of Hamden and Clare Settle (Robert Centrello) of Branford and son Gregory Johnson of New York City. Stuart was predeceased by his parents, three sisters and one brother, two nieces and five nephews as well as his son-in-law Dominic Settle and daughter-in-law Jana Talton Johnson. Stuart received his bachelor's degree from Middlebury College in Vermont, spent 3 years enlisted in the US Army (stationed in San Antonio) and then studied social work at University of Michigan. His professional work started as a medical social worker at Hartford Hospital from 1960 to 1965, Chief Social Worker and later Director of Family Therapy at Yale Psychiatric Institute from 1965 to 1978 and then in private practice from 1978 to 2018. A requiem mass and interment of ashes will be held on Saturday September 8, 2018 at 11 a.m. at Christ Church, 84 Broadway, New Haven, CT. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Metropolitan Opera (metopera.org).
